Yes, and there is the show "My name is Earl"...

 

Right, but do most people think of it as being a title? Is it even used in Great Britain? Earl is not that uncommon in movies and TV series but it seems to me that it's an American name (or am I mistaken?) the only English Earls I know are Earl Grey and Earl's Court.

 

I think of Earl as both a title and a name.

As far as Marquise - I also think of it as both. Case in point - a many great-grandfather of mine, who participated in either our war for independence from England, or during the Civil War (will have to ask my mother about this as I've forgotten) was named Marquis de Lafayette Whiteman. Us Americans have no titles so I think the only reason why I can look at the names and see them as both a title and a name is because of my love of medieval history and how titles were more prominent then. Not to mention, my grandfather on my father's side was the last Duke of the American branch of Frederick the Great's bloodline - my father decided not to take the title. And Duke is also a title used as a name over here, though most known at the moment as the name of a dog for the Bush's brand of baked beans

 

I see little wrong with most of the names on the list. My fist son shall be Kitrax, my second son shall be Slash, my first daughter shall be Aerie...and my dog shall be Jaheira!


Seriously though...those poor celeb kids are going to hate life when they're growing up.

 

You said it Kit. Just because their parents are celebrities doesn't mean that the other kids aren't going to give them a hard time for what their parents decided to stick them with.

 

Depends on the names these other kids have...

There are still a couple of Earls (title) hanging about over here.

I asked for a glass of Chardonnay in a pub once and the barmaid thought it was hilarious because it was her name.

Mind you, I once served a guy who asked for a bottle of bin 12. I went to the celler, got the bottle out of bin 12 and was then yelled at by the guy because he'd asked for a wine called bin 12 and not 'sow-vig-non blonk'!

 

I'm not one My dad refused the title, remember? Hehe

My parents did get to meet Prinz Meinrad von Hohenzollern, the current Prince of the Frederick the Great bloodline, and were acknowledged by him as far as our blood ties are concerned... they considered me too young to get to meet him at that time which really stunk. I'm still miffed at their decision, 20 years later. (Though I get a good laugh every time I see the pictures they had taken with him, because he's not much taller than my mom, my dad is almost a foot and a half taller than her, and his head was chopped off in the photos so you only see him from the neck down )

 

I'm actually interested to know what the parents that named their kids with the more ludicrous names on that list call them at home.

It would explain a lot.

Whether they gave them the names as a sort of strange "protection charm" against the rest of the world, or simply don't think the name important / see it as something easily changed (since after all most of them achieved fame under assumed names different then their given names) might be worth poking at.
Maybe they just wanted to make the transition easier on their children (by making their given names something very few would want to keep).
Maybe they really thought that the things the children are named after have sufficient meaning to deserve a mention in such a way.
Maybe they just wanted an extra page in the papers. Who knows.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the children had a different set of names for their families (maybe nicknames/alterations of the list names).

 

Whenever I visit home I just get called "Child"

Some are okay, but in combinatiuon with an other name quite silly. I can imagine people call their kids Saffron, but not Saffron Sahara.

Other names are just plain stupid. Pilot Inspektor and Audio Science? Pfft!

I find the names Peaches, Fuchsia and Apple weird, but what really boggles my mind is that those names are on a list like this, while other "nature-focused" names like Rose, Violet, Lily, Daisy and Hyacinth are quite common and concidered normal.
I wonder if my kid would kill me if I call her/him Tulip.

 

I wasn't happy about being named 'Barmy' to be honest, especially when my surname is 'Army'. My parents were cruel.

I know a girl whose name is Miina Kenttä - in english it would be Mine Field. I'm also pretty sure that there a more than one Heli Copters living in Finland. Honestly, what were the parents thinking?

 

In french, there's the classic double surname Marin-Gouin, which sounds like the french word for mosquito.

Or the equally funny Fabien L'Amour, which can translate as "Makes Love Good".

 

In Canadian French probably, because I have no idea what word you are referring to as over here we simply call a mosquito "un moustique" and you must have a Canadian accent to make "fais bien l'amour" sound like "Fabien L'Amour"

 

Saffron or Brooklyn aren't too far out there, but most of those names are ridiculous and pretentious.

My stupid niece and her imbecilic husband (not that I'm judgemental) just named their second child "Tux". WTF is with that? Rhymes with several unpleasant ones, it's bizarre, and I've never heard of any living human named that. It's just stupid.

The husband is named "Timothy", and they named their first child Tim as well. So they call that kid by the nickname "Timbit", which is funny to Canadians but probably leaves people from other countries shaking their heads. So I'll explain.

There is a Canadian institution over here in the form of a doughnut / coffee chain called Tim Horton's. There's one on every corner. Their brand name for tiny little doughnut holes is called the Timbit -- as in "I'd like a box of 40 Timbits, please, I'm going to a potluck tonight and was too damn lazy to cook."

I named my kids rare names but didn't get too crazy -- Mariah and Audrey. It's a pity I hate Mariah Carey's guts but I think the name is beautiful.

 

What do you know! Apparently, "maringouin" is only a word in the canadian zoology dictionnary. But it's still a word here...

And yes, "fait" may be pronounced "fa" like : "Qu'est-ce que tu fait?" becomes "S'tu fa?"...

This thread made me think of George in Seinfeld who really wants to name is future child "seven"...
