So they log the IP? If so, couldn't they track you down by putting these kind of pop-ups to as many sites as possible, thus creating an profile of the surfer (a lâ DoubleClick)?

Q #2: the cookie that tells to the server which pop-ups have been showed is named "Pop-up behind", correct?

What do you mean by "track you down"? All that gets written in the cookies is which popups you've seen already so that you don't get the same one every time.

And yes, that's one of them. I don't know if the pop-up one has a different cookie or if they're together.

Ugh. One of the pop-ups at SP was one that used to have a kitten waving its paws around and looking cute, while all kinds of flashing text shouted something which I never read. (I don't read ads)

The same ad is still here, but instead of a kitten, there's a baby whose face strikes me as... well, fugly. I don't know if it's the badly animated kissy face or what, but I don't like it.

    [IMG] Hang on. Tal!
Are you saying that you get paid for only 2 pop-ups which appear on my comp in a day. I keep getting pop-ups in pairs and that too whenever I move to any other part of the site like SoTW or download section. Check with those ad guys. If they aint paying to keep up the site then I'll switch on the pop-up killer on my Opera browser after 2 ads. I only allowed them after I read that they pay for the site.

You are only supposed to get 2 pop-ups every 6 hours. If you get any more your cookies are messed up. And I said they count every 12 hours, not 24.

And since those 2 pop-ups usually don't even load fully, or just one loads etc. it's good to let them load more than just twice because if anything goes wrong with their coming up they don't count at all and I don't get paid anything for them.

2 pop-ups every 6 hours? My cookies must be screwed up then, because I get pop-ups on every single page of SP, every time I load them. Even the "post a reply" screen in BoM gets 1-2 popups. Is there something I need to adjust in my cookies settings? Or, did you mean I'm only supposed to see the SAME pop-up every 6 hours, and they switch out? I would think this had something to do with my being on a Macintosh, but the same thing occurs on my PC at home.

I'm a very confused rabbit. I'd ask this in a PM, but I'm betting I'm not the only one with this question.

No, the cookies are there specifically so you don't get more than 2 pop-ups of any kind in 6 hours. I can't believe you were enduring them on every page...

In IE, go to Tools/Internet Options/Privacy and move the slider all the way down so it says Accept All Cookies and then hit the OK button. That should do it.

I have my slider set on Medium and that seems to work just fine. (Although it seems to be more frequent than every 6 hours,; maybe every 2 hours or so - not a big deal.)

No slider available. I have IE 5.2.2 for Mac. The only options I have regarding cookies is to delete/deny them one by one or altogether.

Oh well. I'll just endure. I plan on subscribing to the banner-free version when you have it up, so it's not a biggy.

Lol, a Macintosh. If I wouldn't know already, I'd guess, are you working in graphics, or how comes.

On my system the timer is more like 60-90 minutes.

The time is the same for everyone, but various things can disrupt the proper acknowledgment of the cookie, so you might get them more often. Some pages might have different code for it too. In the new design this will be all in one place so there should be fewer problems.

As for Macs, can't help you there Death Rabbit. But isn't there a newer version of IE available for it? Or some other browser?

Yeah probably, but like I said, I don't really mind. I just thought it was strange that I got so many when I wasn't supposed to. I just assumed it was normal. I've never minded, to be honest - especially since it helps fund the site. That said - if they pop up so much on MY browser, I'm probably single-handedly funding SP, man! Hook me up!! :)

To my knowledge, I have the newest version of IE available for Mac OSX, which is what I run. I do an auto-update about once a week. At home I'm on a PC, so I'll mess with those settings next time I log on from there.

Actually, that is the problem, they don't count. As I said in one my posts above:

I think the important point here is that, at $3 per 1,000 fully loaded pop-ups, Tal isn't getting rich off of this. I'd be surprised if it amounted to more than $10 per day (and wouldn't be surprised if it was half that)

[IMG] $10 per day! If only! As I said in my post in the subscription thread, I get around $60 a MONTH from pop-ups on SP and the two sites I host. So about $2 a day.
