Wow. That sure got peoples panties in a bunch (in Sarevoks case that would be a "laced body thong", shudder). :p

What I saw was a humorless rant. Like what you like and let it be. People can get so upset when someone attacks something they like.

    Relax. It's friday.

Socker is boring and lame. Just like Baseball and Hockey.

I'll watch football (the one that takes talent) and basketball before I watch or pay any attention to socker or baseball...I might watch hockey for the fights...but that's it.

Give me a true, 'one man against all' sport...like swimming or cycling. Lance Armstrong for example has more talent than any single pro socker player.

Just my 2 cents though. :rolling:

If I do enough training and take a load of drugs, perhaps one day I will be able to be as good as Armstrong in cycling, but I will never be able to do the things that Zidane or Ronaldinio (or Jordan if you want to talk about basketball) do with ball, no matter how much I will train and how many drugs I will take.

I don't know why you even bother answering someone who types socker instead of soccer. If he can't even spell it properly, then how can you expect him to know anything about it at all. Waste of time.

I hate all sports, pretty well. Today especially, they're all crooked and controlled by organized crime. To me, the most pure sport is a fight to the death -- no amount of money can convince someone to throw THAT competition!

I prefer sports like "tonsil hockey".

Huh? I'm fairly certain that the New Zealand Rugby Union is not controlled by organised crime!

Indeed! No 3 words could describe soccer better!

There, I spelled it right for you Pac Man. Why do you so religiously defend a sport? In the end, it is after all, just a GAME! You should defend something worth while, like your little sister, or your wife...or your ego if you don't have a sister or a wife. :rolling:

Sheesh! Has any American here really have football rammed down their throats? I don't even know why the term soccer was coined, to differentiate it from American football, a sport where you only kick the ball during punts and field goals? Don't get me wrong. I love most sports but football is the most popular sport in the world and it requires as much skill and talent as any other sport.

I don't religeously defend football, but i just have to speak up if someone comes along making brainless remarks. You don't like football ? That's your godgiven right, and it's also fine with me, but don't go around telling people how lame and stupid a sport you think football is and expect noone to challenge your statement.

The Lance Armstrong comment for example....that's an empty comment if i've ever seen one. Do you always compare apples with oranges ?

Talk to a yank about football, and that is all you're likely to get.

If you don't like a sport, 9 out of 10 times, you SUCK at it! I enjoy most sports (especially the ones that you could die or break something at any given moment) I can't stand Basketball though, Can you guess why? :p

    Canada? True.

    Russia? True, I think.

Scandinavia? Norway, Iceland, and Denmark have no hockey team to mention, and Sweden and Finland nowadays have lost most of their talents. Norway, Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden favours Football over Hockey as a fact, and I think that most Finnish do the same.

    *sigh*

Once again: 'Soccer' is short for Association Football which is the correct name for this sport. That is what the 'A' stands for in FIFA. In many countries, soccer is the common term for the game because there are so many other sports with the word 'football' in their title. If I said 'football' in New Zealand, I could be talking about:
    - Rugby Union Football ('Rugby')
    - Rugby League Football ('League')
    - Australian Rules Football ('Aussie Rules' or 'Aerial Ping-pong')
    - American Football ('Gridiron)
    - Association Football ('Soccer)

Yes but Harbs, just because a bunch of weird countries decide to abbreviate Association Football., does not make that the correct term.

Football is the correct term, and that's where the discussion closes.

It's quite simple really when you look at it ;) .

    Well, let's see:

    Football in english
    Football in french
    Fussball in german
Podosfairo (from the words podi=foot and sfaira=ball) in greek

and I imagine that the name of this sport in all other languages of the world is originated from the compination of the equivalent words for foot and ball. So Barmy is right, just because a bunch of weird countries decide to abbreviate Association Football, does not make that the correct term. :p

Oh, so FIFA, the governing body for the sport, have got the name wrong in their title? Makes sense. Shall we call them FIF from now on? Anyway, this is a silly debate. I'm always going to call it soccer. :p
