It depends on if Gore decided to continue many of the Clinton policies, which he probably would have. The Clinton administration was a successful one, with some of the best times Americans had seen in decades. Clinton alone cannot get all the credit, because after a shaky start, he managed with a Republican Congress, which operated independent of the Executive branch. That is how it is supposed to work.

But getting back to the topic (which is Al Gore) I think Gore would have been a far better president than the one we are stuck with now. And I think the country would have continued to prosper, rather the decline and slip into stagnation, which we have seen with the dismal performance of the current admistration, and a Congress, which is essentially George's lapdog, and resides in a culture of corruption.

Personality aside, I think Gore would have been fairly honest (as much as a politician can be), and certainly more competent than what we have now (which is still not saying much). The world at large would have been a much better place, especially without the American attempts at empire building we have seen over the last few years.

McCain shamed himself with his support of Bush in 2004. We all know they can't stand each other, yet there was McCain acting the fool on the Republican stage, with his arm around Bush, hugging and laughing with the man who savaged him personally during the primary. It was quite a sickening display, especially for McCain, since he wants to be prez badly, but has little hope that he will get the support he needs from the hard right, despite his selling himself to George II.
