Stephen Donaldson's "Chronicals of Thomas Covenant" (first and second) is the most powerful series I have read.
Lotr irritated me at the end with the long drawn out explanations. There's almost a hundred pages after the climax.

    Tough one ...

The most recent series I've read was Fire & Ice by Martin, so that pops to my mind.

Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince series has got to be on the list. Great books.

And I know everyone calls it a Jordan rip-off, but I loved "Wizards First Rule" by Terry Goodkind. He has such a great mind, some of the ways the Seeker can pierce arguments is brilliant. You don't see much more intelligent dialog than that.

[IMG] Hmmmmm..... there are sooo meny great books out there. LotR,it gose from being the best to therealm ofbeing a classic if I were to lay it aside however I think it would be a tie between David Eddings Belgariard- Malorean books and Merceades Lackey's Valdemar series

Aye, that'd be LoTR. As the best combination of intellectual challenge, feeling, length and of course, an incredibly accurrately detailed world.

Dark Elf Trilogy gave me the best of feelings, and Jason Cosmo Trilogy the best of laughs (unless Hitch Hiker's Quide to the Galaxy is counted in), whereas the Dragonlance had the most interesting of characters (Raistlin and Caramon, big surprise there I imagine).

Medic Mike ... how could I have not listed David Eddings books! Great stuff. Even the Gemstone books with Sparhawk et al were good (not as good as the Belgariad IMHO, but still good!)
