No, a Samurai didn't wield one in each hand. Three weapons make up the Samurai armament, as carried in their belt sash (obi.)

Katana (great sword), wakizashi (small sword) and a tanto (dagger.)

These were the weapons carried by the Samurai caste and the carrying of these weapons denoted Samurai status. Samurai incidentally were not limited to these weapons and there were many different swords available to them. One of which was called a No-dachi and was around seven feet long.

A katana is far too large and heavy to be used one handed as say a sabre or an epee would be and most period paintings or prints show the Katana to be used in a two handed fashion :) .

actually there is no such thing as backstab in 3rd ed

it's actually sneak attack, which is sooooo much better than the unbalanced Backstab roolz.

But i won't start the argument again...

I think, Yoshimo could use his katana for backstabbing in BG2.

    What a NONSENSE!

The katana is a slashing weapon.
It hasn't got a sharp edge, to backstab anybody. It is phisically impossible!

    And...it is really two-handed.

A katana was generally used as a two-handed weapon, but Musashi is famous for creating a style using the Katana in the primary hand, and the Wakizashi in the off hand, so it is possible to use the weapon one-handed. It was generally used two-handed for power and speed but the ability to switch to one hand makes sudden changes of direction easier.

Miyamoto Musashi was an exception both in his physical size and his sword skills, eventually becoming a Kenshi (sword saint.)

The use of the two weapons was very exceptional as well and often frowned upon. The Wakizashi was primarily used to denote rank and wasn't used in battle.

Also the wakizashi was an indoor weapon, when you gave your katana up at the door. But, yeah, not used much.

  7. How do you backstab, is it a special button to press or is it just to walk up behind someone and do it

Choose your thief (only thieves and some thief kits can backstab) click stealth (in the thief menu bar at the base of the screen) or use a ring or a potion of invisibility. Walk up behind somebody and then click "attack" on the person you are backstabbing.
