A lot of insightful ideas have been expressed here. I am surprised by the data Laches provided which states that many prefer a sole superpower. My guess would have bee the opposite.

Personally, I am uncomfortable with the US seemingly un-challengable position of power. My concern is two-fold: first, although our government is a democracy more than half do not vote, thus the people are not really controlling their elected officials: special interests groups, donors and businesses are more effectual. We the people have a way of becoming emotionally charged, and while so, tend to disregard the basic foundation of our country i.e. the constitution (IMHO). (I think I have already talked about the cowboy mentality on another topic.) I agree with some of you that say power can attract many wackos and it is always possible we could nominate one into office. My second concern is selfish; I worry we will be the victims of more assaults. It is not good to be too big and powerful, if it means others will direct their hate toward you.
