I wish to point out that 2 pairs seem incompatible and end in a fight (unless someone knows a trick?):

    Keldorn & Viconia

    Edwin & Minsc

In terms of power, it's difficult to decide
between them. Viconia's turning undead is amazing and her magic resistance can be very helpful, Keldorn is the tool against wizards.
In the end, I prefered Viconia, also because you can have her early without trouble. Keldorn's quest is too tough without some objects useful against gazing monsters...
I prefered Minsc because he was soon equipped with a nice sword which other NPCs couldn't handle.
Here's my party, tough on the battlefield:
Player Elf FMT long sword, azuredge
    Korgan axe, hammer
Minsc sentient sword + 3, bow, mace
Viconia mace, flail of ages, sling
    Valygar bow, spear, halberd (later)
    HaerDalis (harp)
Normally, Minsc will leave for Imoen. After this, maybe Edwin will replace HaerDalis?

Against tough mages, I have no choice but send an enraged Korgan, I can't bring down their barriers.
