Yes. That's because with a R/C, the game looks at your cleric level, and gives you access to ALL priest spells (cleric and druid) based on the cleric level. That's why a R/C is so powerful (some would say over-powered). Also, some people think this is a bug.

@ Klorox - the dual-class thac0 will still be better. With a m/c, you'll only get to Ranger level 12, so your thac0 will top out at 9. With a dual class, you'll eventually go with the Cleric's thac0 once it gets better than the ranger's; dualling at level 7 means you'll get to cleric level 21; at cleric level 19, you have a thac0 of 8.

R/C. If for the ability to soak damage like sponge more than anything else.

    EDIT: ToB-based content removed.

(Edit: references to Scythesong's TOB comments vis-a-vis Blade HLA's deleted, since he deleted his.)

While I agree that the Blade is more versatile than a R/C (and more fun to play), I just don't think it makes a better tank - perhaps better as an all-round character (debateable), but not the best front-liner.

I was reading the ToB forums earlier, and from this side of the globe it is 30 minutes past midnight. :p
The Blade can tank with the best of them, but he ain't the best of them.

Berserker dual-classed to Cleric at lvl 13, grandmastery in Flails. This character is preferable to the ever present R/C because of the question asked...that he be versatile enough to stand upto Liches, spell-casters, etc...and keeping that in mind, he rocks! He gets rage, which is EXTREMELY good for him, IMHO. The cleric spells don't hurt either.

    Thanks for the clarification, Splunge!

Faraaz, without ToB installed, it will be a really long time until the Berserker abilities will be reactivated.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Guess I'll try a r/c. Do you guys suggest dual wielding or using a shield? What proficiencies?

Your ranger gets 2 free points in dual wield, and using a shield is pointless, since the last thing a r/c needs is more protection. Go with dual-wield.

As far as proficiencies go, it doesn't really matter; your cleric will limit you to blunts anyway. Including the 2 "freebie" points, you start with 8 points; if you dual at level 7, you'll get another 4 by the time you get your ranger abilities back, for a total of 12. So put them wherever you want (blunts only as a ranger, though); just make sure you have 2 points in flails. Just a word of caution - when you dual over, don't put any points in a weapon or style that your ranger put points into; if you do, when you get your ranger abilities back, the points you put in as a cleric will be lost.
