Last year's (2002) 'top ten' list for names in Norway was;

for gents;

Markus*, Kristian*, Mathias*, Martin, Sander, Jonas, Andreas*, Henrik, Kristoffer*, Magnus

for ladies;

Virne, how could you orget Pekka for males? Hell, even my mother was called that at one point!

I don't really have that much to add to Virne's list.

I don't really know what I'd like to name my kids, but I think that I might keep in the tradition of adding some form of Mary in a girl's name. (Grandmother's third name was Maria, my mom's middle naame is Marjatta, sister's middle name is Maria, my middle name is Marii.... so forth and so forth...)

 

In Greece the most common names are by far
Giannis (or John in Eglish)
Konstantinos (or Kostas)
For the first one there is a proverb saying:
A house without John does not accomplish anything (more or less)
The most common by far surname is Papadopoulos (almost half Greece is populated by those) and some surname endings according to the area apply too:
-akis for people from Crete
-idis for people from Pontos

 

Not to insult the rest of the countries of the world, but if all of the names are like the ones you posted, I'd have a hell of a time pronouncing them, or remembering them for that matter. Here in West coast Canada there are the occassional Mikes(Mike from Kenmore), but mostly Brandons and Ashleys(spelt a thousand ways from Sunday).

My offspring would have the names of Jakob and Valerie.

 

2 more stereotypes to add:
-Northern Americans see foreign people as from the 'rest' of the word.

-If English is your native language, you have a really hard time pronouncing any foreign names or words.

No offence ment, of course...

 

I'm not too sure of the common names here, there seem to be alot of Katies, Jordans, and Olivias about.

My son is called Jack. If I have another their name will be Macaulay, Noah or Jude for a boy and Shannon, Sarah or Holly for a girl

 

In Bulgaria the most common names are:
Gueorgi
Ivan
Dimitar
Borislav

For girls:
Maria
others - I'm not sure, I don't want to make a mistake.

As for pronunciation, I think that naming your kid Anneke or Hanneke is just plain cruel if they want to leave the country.
