Not close. I have only completed the barbarian, assassin (which blew chunks and was useless) and druid.

I am missing two pieces of the paladin, and one each of the necro, sorc, and amazon.

The one I'd be interested in is the paladin as far as a potential power build is concerned. In the case of the necro, sorceress and Amazon, there are probably better builds available using an assortment of uniques and rares. Now anyone can make a hammerdin relatively cheaply, but the paladin set could open some other possibilities. Of course, good luck completing it. Two of the pieces are in the highest TC and the other two are the second highest and two are class specific (shield and scepter) so they drop with 1/3 frequency. Easily the most difficult set to complete.

And the assassin set sucks because assassins suck. My least favorite class and it's not close.

Missing the caduceous and the helmet on the pallie set.

I am pretty convinced that runwords plus rares/uniques/crafted items are going to be superior to every class-specific set, but I a kinda like the sets for a cool factor (except the assassin set).

If you recall, I tried to run an assassin with the full set (it was the first one I completed), but gave it up halfway through hell due to a complete lack of killing power. It became too painful.

I think that was mainly because the set was not particularly good for any specific skill tree and, with an assassin, you really need to focus on a particular skill tree.

I.e., on the druid set, I have no problem killing as a melee bear using fire claws (of course, that's solely because his idiot borrows the sorc's idiot's infinity to break the majority of fire immunes) and the set would also support a windy or a summoner. It's only got four pieces, it's got plenty of sockets, you can fill in the shield of your choice, along with belt and jewelry, and, even though the weapon blows for physical damage, the perks of the druid class cover that.

Well I think the other thing about the paladin set is the whole thing is heavily socketed. So you make major improvements to both weapon speed, block speed etc. (although holy shield obviates the need for much shield blocking improvement. Generally I agree with your assessment. I think with the necro and sorceress it's not even close that the sets aren't your best option. For some of the others, it's really a matter of what variant you play. To use the example of the Amazon, obviously not the best for a javazon, but maybe a pretty good bowazon. With the barb, you're pretty much stuck with WW owing to a two handed weapon. Of course with all the plus skills and the barn being a class that really benefits from utilizing multiple trees (is there a class with more one point wonders) being limited to WW isn't so bad.

But I think the paladin option is different in that it should do well at anything EXCEPT a hammerdin. In fact, just about any other pally build should be good with that set.

Hmmm. I have three pallies that I have run, a Freezealot, a hammerdin and an aurodin. I don't think that the set is great for any of them, except maybe the freezealot.

The set appears to provide +100 resist all, meaning that it is easy to get to 75 resist all in Hell with some Pdiamonds in the shield and a few shimmering charms. The set gives some nice strength and dex, so you can pump more into the vit. The weapon starts at -10 and has +40 Ias, with 3 or 4 sockets, so there's room for a shael or an IAS jewel, some ED jewels, or, if you are rich, a ber or two for CB as you need it there or from, say, upped gores. You could get good stats from the IK gloves and belt (you'd want two of them for the 25% IAS perk and you can't really use the boots because you need the CB from the gores).

I think it's feasible for an elemental zealot of some sort, that's for sure. I'm just not sure that it's all that much better (or even a little better) than an elemental zealot with COH, guillaume's, a heaven's light, etc.

By the way, I finished the Aldur's druid. He was fine and all, but no great shakes. The one thing that was awesome was, when you combine CTA on switch with spirit, the pet that adds life, a decent lycanthropy level, and switching to WB, his life was well over 5000. The fireclaws damage was fine and the infinity broke most FI's, but, I have to say, the weapon damage (physical) sucks, so he didn't leach well and he didn't really handle unbreakable FI's all that quickly.

He was never close to dying at all.
