Uh-oh! Look what Shralp started! :p

In any case - Right to bear arms:

As we all (hopefully) know, firearms were banned in Australia. Only the authorities are allowed to own them, and the project cost the Australian government over 500 million dollars. Since the disarmament (hee! fun word!) in Australia:

    Homicides are up 3.2%
    Assaults are up 8.6%
    Armed Robbery is up 44%
    -and in Victoria
Firearm based homicide is up over 300%

These statistics were recorded in 1999, btw.

(If you can refute the above, do so. But remember, any increase at all would mean that the laws were not working properly.)

    --------

As far as politics go, I will not hold faith in any party any more, but we'll see how things go. I'm old enough to vote now, so I'm trying to keep an open mind.

Most of the crimes and murders are made by illegal weapons, so you shouldnt make harder to get a gun, like sir Belisarus said most of the legal weapons are used to sports and stuff. I think that peoples should have right to choose that wheter they own a gun or not.

And remeber: guns dont kill people do. :D

Come on, you little commie dude. Be adventurous. Make a prediction. You say that the Republicans are evil/incompetent/whatever. Tell me what measurable indicator will change during the two years they are assured of having control of Congress and the White House.

    Otherwise pipe down.

I would prefer it if I was refrained from being called a liberal, I am not more a liberal than I am a conservatist. I loath them all, conservatives, liberals and socialist but as it always is with politics you have to choose the least evil and I have been forced to choose socialism. So if I am to be called something let it be socialist or commie or whatever even though I am not very fond of that either as they are almost as big idiots as everyone else but atleast they give the appearance of caring.

And to answer your so called challenge Shralp what about the income and state of living for the poorest 10% of the american people? If it rise in the next 2 years I will be glad to give you the 50$. Please mail or PM me for details :)

Personally, I rather expect 2 years of the general public being bent over a barrel, and 20 years of recovery, much like when Reagan was president.

The rich got MUCH richer, and everyone else wound up with the rather short end of the stick.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a "liberal", but I do have a conscience, and from what I've seen, none of the GOP seem to.

Bush's idea of judges scare me. Bush's ideas for "Homeland Security" remind me of the Gestapo, and I rather doubt any good will come of it. :(

Oh, my! I didn't think I'd get such an easy one, Joa!

Shall we say median income for the lowest 10% of American households? You are so on.

Yochimbo, you need to go back and look at the stats for the 80s. Even the most left-wing of academics will now admit that it was a time when everyone got richer. And try not to play the GOP = evil game. It's silly. Most people with strong political opinions (as opposed to most politicians) truly want to make the nation better. They just differ on how to do it.

Anyway, if you truly believe what you say, then make the same bet with me that Joacqin did.

Dang. I'm gonna get rich in 2004 even without GOP tax cuts. :1eye:

    I didn't say GOP = Evil

I said GOP = no sense of the future, MONSTROUS deficit spending, growing unemployment, unjustified agression against other countries (Iraq, not Afganistan), etc.

    Cheney = Evil, though. :D

As to everyone growing richer through the 80's, that's true, once the recession brought about by Reagan & his cronies finally turned around.

I remember having to work sh*t jobs because no good ones were available. And I'm seeing it happen again.

Demo's are frequently mealy-mouthed whiners, but Repo's are equally often in it for themselves.

Personally I have lost faith in both parties over the years. The Democrats are in shambles,no clear leader no clear party agenda.
I think this will be a good chance for the republican party to put up or shut up.If they cant improve things here in the States over the next couple of years they have no one to blame but themselves(a rare thing in politics).
I just wish these campaigns would be run more on what the canidate will do for us instead of how bad their opponent is.
The republicans have the rare chance here to implement their agendas with very little resistance. As they say its their ball let them run with it.
It will be an interesting couple of years.
By the way Jo you sure seem preoccupied with thoughts of the US attacking everything in sight.
People seem to forget that the US gives more foriegn aid to more countries than any other single country in the world. Not bad for being the Evil dictators that you semm to think we are.

For the past several years, every time the Republicans have gotten what they wanted in tax cuts, my taxes have gone up. I'm afraid, vary afraid. I already pay nearly 23% of my income in taxes, I can't afford any more!

Anyone would think reading this topic that Jesus Christ himself had landed in Washington. The blind adoration for a bunch of rednecks getting into power is just sickening.

Hallelujah! Lets kill some arabs! Yeeehah!

That reminds me of a joke:

The Iraqi Ambassador visits the USA, and meets with George Bush. The business concluded, the Iraqi Ambassador enquires of the President: "My son is a great fan of your Star Trek. But tell me, there are Americans, Asians, Europeans, even Russians in the crew - but why no Arabs?".

Bush leans back and smiles - "That's because it's set in the future."

Dorian, the US pays very little foreign compared to their GDP/BNP or any other measure for total income for a nation. It is not strange that the US with around 300 million inhabitants and a GDP a hundred times bigger than Sweden and most other developed nations in the world pays more *total* aid but if you count it as percentage of GDP the US pays among the least in the world. Much of what is called aid is arms to Israel as an example as well. So Dorian the US pays very little foreign aid compared to most other western nations.

    Riddley Walker,

 What can I say. This is the kind of ignorant rhetoric that polarizes the country.
I guess if you don't have anything intelligent to say, you can just spew nonsense. At least we know where you stand.

Riddley, as a proud redneck, I am greatly offended by your brash stereotyping and overgeneralization of "us rednecks."

It is not like we round up posses anymore.

    Thank You

    A Concerned Redneck

PS - Hey Shralp, If you want to cut me in on all of that money you are going to make on these bets, just let me know - I am with you all the way!

Well Jack if that is how you are going to label people, why didn't you get your dander up over this one?:

"Come on, you little commie dude." (Shralp)

Uh, he labelled himself as a communist. "Little commie dude" was therefore an endearment. :1eye:

Joa, I want to see your sources for the claim that the U.S. gives less in foreign aid as a percentage of GDP than anyone else. I assume that ignores things like our overwhelming funding of UN peacekeeping missions, free yard for the UN HQ, etc.

Yeah, interesting read, but it doesn't say how those numbers were totalled. I expect that it doesn't take into account the UN factors I mentioned above, special trade priveleges extended, etc. And I wonder if it takes into account all of the loans given out by the U.S. (as opposed to outright gifts). Also, what about the loans made that are then forgiven? (The U.S. forgave billions in foreign loans in 2000.)
