What repercussions? And by whom? If Robertson hires professional assassins to do "work" outside of the US, it'd be pretty much impossible to trace it back to him with any real degree of certainty if they were careful. And considering his connections with the Bush administration, I'm sure the US authorities would be even less inclined than usual to look at any wrongdoing by him that any foreign country leader (or the UN) would accuse him of.

Castro keeps going on about the US plots and attempts at assassinations of him, but no one takes him seriously. And for all we know, it could all well be true (well, most of it, at least). I think anyone else coming up with the same accusations would be dismissed more or less in the same way.

Pat Robertson, unfortunately, is an influential figure. Millions, not hundreds of thousands, watch his show and look to him for moral guidance, such as it is.

Chavez is a much-unloved figure in Washington, due to his refusal to toe an American line. He seems to believe he's the President of an independant country. There was a serious attempt to overthrow him a couple of years ago. The Presidential Palace was seized; the private TV channels announced his downfall. But the citizens--the "people", if you will--took to the streets in protest, the coup collapsed, and Chavez remains in power, to the discomfiture of certain people in our capital.

Whether Robertson made his comments on his own hook, or whether he was acting as a stalking dog is unknown. In any case they fell flat, there were serious repercussions, and he was forced to issue an apology.

When the great American journalist H. L. Mencken covered the famous Scopes trial in Tennessee way back in 1925, he noted that although the primary emotion of Christianity as taught by Jesus was love, the primary emotion of American Evangelical Christianity was hatred. I think Robertson's comments support this judgment.

Lets not forget that he had a very strong chance of being president during the 80's, except for the fact that he lied about his war record, and the corruption of other TV Evangalists.

Agreed Rally. There was no chance of him winning the presidency at any time, and especially during the 80s. Carter wasn't overly popular during his term, and pretty much anyone the Republicans ran would have won the '80 election. Then Reagan became immensely popular so that whoever ran against him in '84 (turned out to be Mondale) was nothing more than a sacrificial lamb the Dems threw out there because they had to run somebody. Reagan's popularity was so great that it also guaranteed the victory of Bush I in '88 over Dukakis (sp?)
