@Richardi - All of the excess experience does go away. However, there are a few things to do to make thing easier in the beginning. For starters, don't finish quests early in the game. For example, say you want to clear Nalia's keep. Clear the keep, but don't talk to Nalia after defeating TorGal (or if you have Nalia, do everything except kill TorGal. Do that for as many quests as possible. As soon as you dual, go around and finish the quests by talking to the person who gives you your XP reward, and you'll be well on your way back to regaining your old abilities.

Alternatively, I suppose this would work: Dual your character to the fighter. Then do not push the level up botton until you have enough XP accumulated to re-activate your old class. That way there, all of the proficiencies that you earn could be placed on top of proficiencies you've already selected. Obviously, this method will not work if you don't have a party to pick up the slack while you're sitting around with a lvl 1 fighter.

7 swashbuckler levels cost 42 HP and you get +2 AC and +1 thac0/damage in exchange.

Additional 3 levels cost additional 7 HP and yield additional +1 AC/thac0/damage.

The dualing period will be far longer when you dual later.

The game is easy enough to dualclass at any level you want for roleplaying reasons, there's no need for powergaming.

    thanks K monster.
But if your character has 18 CON, then he gets much more HP as a fighter than as a thief no?
So in fact you would be missing out on close to 15-20 HP?

Actually, at level ten a rogue (or wizard) gains more HP than a warrior (or priest), because of the HP flatlining happening at level 10 for warriors (and priests) and level 11 for rogues (and wizards). Levels 8, 9, & 10:

    Fighter (CON 18): 14 + 14 + 3 = 31
    Thief (CON 16+): 8 + 8 + 8 = 24

Which means kmonster's numbers are correct.
