    You think you are having it hard? I get the feeling that Obama's general position on pretty much anything can be summed up as "stir up hopes, then bend over for fun and profit" - except that we are not having any fun, and he's not getting any profit!

    I largely agree with this - especially in 1992. Perot hurt Bush much more than he hurt Clinton. I am less convinced that Perot's presence on the ballot in 1996 was as big of a deal. Dole in '96 was kind of the like the equivalent of Kerry in 2004 - a candidate that just wasn't very good, and would have a hard time winning even under ideal circumstances.

    Clinton primarily won two terms in office because the economy was in such great shape through much of his tenure. (Note, I'm not saying he was primarily responsible for it - I think the president typically has very LITTLE to do with how the economy fares. I'm just saying that money almost always wins. If people feel they are better off financially, they'll vote the guy into a second term.
