Over 50 brands of Vodka you say? :yum: And this pub is in Cologne? I've got to add this place to my list of places to visit when I eventually make my way over to Germany.

I picked up a bottle today in the off licence. I put it down when I got home and my flatmate decided to look at the beers I bought. Smash! :wail: €8 gone.

No idea. I always like to pick up something different when I'm picking up my regular beers. Problem is I can't remember what most of them are like I go through so many. I do remember not to go for cherry beer. That stuff was stronger than the dilutable flavours you get to mix with water. Sickening.

I know Duvel, it is ... ok as far as Belgian beer goes. Beware of headaches; it is very sweet and fruity IMO.

As for the lots of foam, the Belgian beer use foam boosters, and extracts and other additives to create their, for simplicity's sake, beers. Where we are at 'ok as far as Belgian beer goes' - while I am not opposed to the occasional Belgian beer, and indeed, think they are interesting (as indicated by me having four more unexplored Belgian strongs on the shelf, waiting to be researched) they are IMO usually inferior to good German strong beer brewed under the Bavarian beer purity law of 1516 (i.e. only made of water, barley malt and hops - and nothing else).

I also think that the general sweetness of Belgian beers can ruin your sense of taste in that you'll find perfectly normal i.e. hopsy beer excessively bitter. So beware. Drink some decent Pilsener beer after Belgian beer, just for proper perspective.

I actually have a drinking glass of this brand of beer. I don't remeber how the beer itself tasted though... Maybe it's easily forgettable... :)

I got all kinds of Leffe-bottles standing on my desk now. They're all empty, though, and I have no idea how to describe them. I say they're all very good and leave it at that. :D

The Belgians make the best beer, hands down. The Italians are worthy of being noted, but nobody can hold a candle to the Belgians. Although I've recently found a Peruvian beer called Cusquena which I think is quite nice. The best beer though depends on the occasion and the weather. I mean, I wouldn't go out round the clubs etc. and try and find the most spectacular beer - anything will do.

Barmy, you sugar your tea and coffee I presume?

And I cannot agree with you that the Belgians make the best beer. They don't.

I got a big box with a collection of British ales, stouts and different kinds of beer from smaller producers from my pupils. Will try to report here, some of them I have tried before and some are new to me. Will be interesting. A box of beer is way better than some stupid flowers.

I mean no, I don't take sugar in my tea. The question mark was a bit of a 'wtf' symbolization.

    Barmy,
having 'come around', my impression is that the one thing that Belgian beers have in common is their sweetness. Not bad beers, mind you, but I have tasted far better ones.

Every nation has good beers, I just find Belgium has far fewer crappy ones :-).

If you want to sample some good English ales, I'd recommend Jaipur (especially, I really can not recommend this beer enough) and anything that comes out of the Wychwood brewey.

Czech beers are underrepresented in this thread, so here's one:

    #1 name: Velkopopovický Kozel Dark
#2 brewery: Plzeňský Prazdroj, Czech Republic
    #3 type: Dark Lager
#4 color: Very dark brown, with a hint of red, almost black.
#5 foam: Quite thin, the foam is light brown.
    #6 scent: Sweet, little smokey.
#7 taste: Caramel and chocolate, malty. Very soft.
    #8 voltage: just 3,8%
#9 notes in the margin: The taste is great, but it could use some more punch. Very good for a bottle or two. Should be served only lightly chilled, not too cold.

    Ok Rags...

I tried 1 Austrian and 2 German beers tonight since I was at one of the state liquor stores that has a nice selection of imported beer.

1st, I tried Bitburger Premium Pilsner...the one you already reviewed. Terrible, just terrible beer. I couldn't even get half-way through the bottle. The smell reminded me of a skunk. Yuck. :nolike:

2nd, I tried Samichlaus from Austria. It has a 14% voltage, and it was not to my liking. I drank the whole bottle, but I won't be buying another.

3rd, and lastly, I tried Köstritzer. Now this one I liked. I didn't know what to expect from Germany's "#1 Black Lager"...but I was pleasantly surprised. I will be drinking this again. :yum:

Now, since I'm not a beer expert, nor a beer lover like you...would you do me a favor and give us a real review on Köstritzer and Samichlaus?

    #1 name: TYSKIE GRONIE
    #2 brewery: Kompania Piwowarska breweries
    #3 type: Pale Lager
    #4 color: Clear and golden
    #5 foam: Decent and white
    #6 scent: Smells.... like beer
#7 taste: Nothing fancy, nothing loud either, faint hint of hops with a dry bite.
    #8 voltage: 5.6%
#9 notes in the margin: Good tasting lager, goes down well on a hot day - buy bottled not in cans.
