They said on the news here that a large group of English fans attacked Portugese cops, have you heard of anything?

    Misunderstanding that.

A group of fans got drunk and were a bit rowdy (no troubles, just drunken rowdyness). Then the cops come in and start hitting people and bashin people about. The fans had no choice but to defend themselves. Most probably 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.
Whatever you hear on your news, remember that the Portugal police were well OTT.

It's the English' reputation that precedes them. The cops don't want to take any chances. Too bad the goodwilling Brits are victims too here.

    That's a very unfortunate truth :( .
The problem is, if thats the attitude the police take then the vicious cycle keeps going round and we can't get rid of our reputation :( .

I saw on the news last night a load of football fans smashing up some poor guy's pub somewhere in Portugal. Is the level of violence at this tournament starting to ramp up, or is the evil news media just making up stories again?

It makes no difference for hooligans if their team wins or loses, they're not there for football in the first place. If England wins, they are happy, get drunk, and start rumbling, and if they lose, they are angry, get drunk, and start rumbling.

Not much difference if your pub gets smashed to bits by happy or angry hooligans. :D

I am quiet happy that England has won. If they lose, they usually stab people. So, we won't replace the Turks as their favourite stabbing target. Last time they passed through here, they stabbed a Libanese guy for looking Turkish, next to the rioting all day and demolish one of my favourite Kebab-sources.

I heard on the news they were threatening to ban England from the tournament itself if the hooligans don't behave.

And would that be justice ? Sheesh, let England play their matches and kick the troublemakers out of the country, is that so difficult ?

    Edit: breaking news from Portugal....

    England fan killed in Portugal

Portuguese police have arrested a man over the death of an England fan in a suspected attempted robbery.
The man is reported to have been stabbed in Rossio Square, Lisbon, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The Foreign Office was able to confirm a man had died but said no other details would be available until his family had been informed.

"We can confirm that a British national has been killed," the Foreign Office spokeswoman said.

The man was taken to Sao Jose hospital in Lisbon where he was pronounced dead on arrival, Portuguese police said.

The death was the only incident reported after England's 4-2 victory over Croatia on Monday night.

A BBC correspondent in Lisbon said the mood in the city had seemed peaceful following the match.

Oh, it's "justified". Well, that's OK, then.

Only if you have no self-control.

If my property got smashed up by some distraught sports fan, I'm not going to say "Oh, it's OK, I understand where his emotions are coming from."

Note that at this point we still have no evidence that Lisbon will be smashed up. It still might not happen.

If it DOES happen, and they whine about it afterewards, then next time maybe they should think twice before applying to organise something.

You can't be serious. You're saying that the Portugese should accept violence and damage as a natural consequence of hosting a sports event??

    Thanks dude.

It's just that i THINK i know the English a little, i've been working with a bunch of Eastenders for 9 years. Rough guys, but not necessarily with criminal intentions. If you want to set these guys off, you need to press certain buttons, so to speak. If you don't press these buttons, you'll be dealing with the nicest bunch of lads you'll ever meet. However, if you DO press the buttons, they can make your life miserable for at least the duration of a footballmatch. That's exactly the problem with most authorities that host a tournament in which England participates. It's like they WANT to press that button, so they can act violently. If you keep fans from different sides appart, let them have their beers, let them chant whatever they want, there will be no violence. Or at least the violence will be controlable.

English footballfans are NOT animals, you just need a manual.
