I almost always played a combat character in Fallout 2 (I dunno, I like killing things) and I really like how both small guns, big guns and energy weapons have aquedate weapons for finishing the game with, although you don't get any energy weapons or big guns at the start unless you know where to go.
Oh, and you can finish the game with only unarmed & melee weapons, I partially did that once. ^^

Although I've actuall played through fallout 2 multiple times with basically the same character:

    st: 5
    pe: 7
    en:5
    cr: 5
    in: 9
    ag: 6
    lu: 5

    traits: only gifted

Tags: Small guns, Speech, & usually unarmed (for the quests and easier start)

Nicely combat capable. Compensating for the skill penalty from gifted by getting high int, which combined with speech gives me access to most of the dialogue in the game.

Your build sounds like good fun too, for a first playthrough a bit of extra money may certainly come in handy. ^^

@Phearlock: AG 6 isn't much, don't you feel like running low on AP?

I don't get how you can live with a mere 6 Agi either. Are there many Agi upgrades available throughout the game?

Fallout 2 seems to be a tad more difficult than the first one, but of course I also had the power armour and the blaster pretty earlish.

It's going OK so far, been to kalmath and dealt with the problems my evil incarnated protagonist could be arsed to deal with, then went on to the den and got myself involved in a gang war :p.
Got Vic out (he seems buggy to me! no matter what I set his combat tacs to he just runs away whenever we encounter enemies, so he has effectively become nothing but a mule...) and met up with Ed who said he couldn't help me...
Then I picked all pockets worth picking in exterior vault city and stroke a deal with the first citizen. Went to Gecko to see what all the fuss was about, and decided the 'best' approach would be just to initiate a meltdown (thanks for the info Harold!). Couldn't be arsed to figure the right sequence out on the computer though so just had the glowing ghoul use the clipboard notes I found at Harold's. then I assassinated Streeker for my fuel cells with a shotgun blast to the eyes and got the hell outta there (the entire city was hostile now and those peckers with the riffles hurt a lot, so I just fled ;)).
The First tire Citizen wasn't exactly happy with the fact that I effectively contaminated the entire area with radiation, so I had to pop some pills so I could pass citizenship and get to that central computer.
Guess it's onward to vault 15 now in my brand new car!

Changed my final build a tad

    Went with (after gifted):

    St: 5
    Pe: 6
    En: 4
    Ch: 7
    In: 8
    Ag: 8
    Lk: 9

Instead... rest is pretty much the same.

Non linearity and almost total freedom, that's what is great about that game.

Okay, finally got some time to play some more again. I went to fault 15 to check things, but I couldn't get to the actual vault, so i began discovering the area nearby (having played fallout 1 I realized that vault 13 had to be somewhere in the area), which lead me to the NCR. I really enjoyed the reference to fallout 1 here, with the statue in the center and president Tandi :); especially that everyone thought vault 13 to be a myth, hehe. Anyways, I agreed to help Tandi out because I needed to get access to Vault 15 myself somehow to check for the location of vault 13. So I went back to vault 15 and found the woman guarding the path, so of course I had to put her down :p. Then I began searching vault 15, and found a computer, which gave me the location of vault 13 (yay). Now, I'm searching vault 13, and I've found the GECK. Now, my question is, upon returning the GECK will I complete the game? My guess would be no, but I want to be sure.

Oh, I apparently suck at being evil! I have 93 karma, hehe. Hadn't really interested me much in my karma up to now though, and pretty much just done what I've liked to, which I guess is also the best way to go around it first time you play. Not that I have ever really done anything for anyone without getting something in return though, so maybe I'm more on a neutral path.

    Play and you'll find out.

Ok, since you asked the answer is no. ;)

Getting a low karma shouldn't be a problem. But in a first run you can't go and kill anyone if you want to complete as many quests as possible (you can't do everything in the game since some quests are exclusive).

If you kill all the random encounters your bad and your good karma will even out.

My guess is that you've been busy killing lots of baddies and thus gained plenty of positive karma points. It's more evil vs (more disruptive) evil rather than neutral (which is hard to maintain).

    That one is good.:p

Watch out for other encounters though and make sure you save before!

There is one really bad special encounter that you don't want to get because by running into it you'll get the "jinxed" perk which is bound to ruin any fighting build you may have.
It is the Pariah Dog encounter and the only solution is to load a previous save.

Managed to turn my karma around by doing some slave raids and grave digigng, and I am now scourge of the wastes! Got myself some nifty Enclave Advcanced Power Armor and a Gauss riffle! Currently doing some San Fran questing, but I don't think there's very much left for me to do (besides taking on the Enclave for good) really. I'm level 17.

You must have missed many many quests...

I once did a run with a non violent character who didn't use any weapons and didn't engage in combat. I had only one kill in the entire game
    namely the Big Bad Boss
and I was level 19 at the end (and I didn't get XP from kills).

So if you do the math you will come to the conclusion that the game has a lot more to offer.

The highest I ever got was only level 36 but I intend to try and go beyond that level some day.

Yeah, same with fallout 1 I thought I was done there too, so I'm going on a "world tour", to see if I've missed some stuff. But being slaver and having very low karma prolly also means that there's a ton of quests I can't even get.

Just became Prizefighter and Porn Star in new Reno .

    I missed the Slaver part.

Being a Slaver makes a lot of people angry and many won't even talk to you or give you quests. You can't blame them though, having that big tattoo on the forehead might look cool but it doesn't make your character look like a nice and trusty fellow.

Since your character is such a bad guy you can check for the quests you may have missed and if nobody complies just kill everyone (making sure you do the quests first of course). That should give you enough XP to get to higher levels.

Up on 22 now. There was still apparently LOADS to do in San Fran. Did the Lo Pan and Dragon challenges and then killed the Dragon in the ring. Also hadn't even noticed that there was an entire sub level on the tank (full of nasties) :p.

Had also overlooked the hubogolist area. Joined them and did their quests (and got the hardened power armour for Cassidy, which I had to give up for fuel though :(). I'm now a demon spawn. When I formated the Shi guys computer pretty much all of china town went hostile on me and I had to butcher the lot ! Lost vic and my robodog, but meh. I have 100 repair by now so don't really need Vic for anything but carrying stuff.

    That's the way to go!

Keeping your followers is a real challenge at higher difficulty levels, you need to pay attention to their equipment and the instructions you give them (sometimes it's better to have them wait for you if -and only if- your karma isn't too low because some of them won't accept to get back in your party). Since they level up they can be pretty good with the right weapons (it took me some time to find out how deadly Vic could be but it was worth the trouble).

Nevertheless when playing with the rough combat option they tend to die rather quickly when facing dangerous foes.

Yep, it's pretty tough at times. especially 'cus I only had a 2nd Power Armour which Cassidy was using along with another Gauss Riffle, so the others are pretty voulnarble - Cassidy is very deadly though (I of course now only have the one power armour since I had to give up the hardened one).

Just landed in the Enclave base. I'm level 25 now. I quickly enough realised that I can't really take my companions along with me many places since the enclave dudes will then attack and I'll have to kill them. And I don't want any of that possitive karma (-1403 now). So I had to 'put down' Cassidy since he won't rejoin as I'm a Slaver, so now I only have Myron, and I pretty much can't get him to fight effectively at all (any help would be appreciated).

Update: Game defeated. Last fight was really easy with all them turrets and the Enclave squad helping me. I didn't get hit once and I think he died in some 3 rounds. Oh well, at least I got to kill the US President  :p. Got through the final Enclave area pretty quickly, but I guess that was mainly because I was avoiding killing any Enclave soldiers directly. I like how you can do it like that many places in this game though; not kill a thing, sneak around and then blow 'em all up, or in this case contaminate them with a deadly virus.
All-in-all Fallout 2 was pretty good, but not as good as Fallout 1 IMHO.

    I ended up with:

-1373 karma (kinda silly that you get +karma for stuff that you have to do in order to complete the game, oh well).
    berserker
    Slaver
    Pornstar
    Prizefighter
    Grave Digger
    Separated
    Sexpert
Made Man: Bishop (whom I of course assassinated ).

Next time around I'm going to try a Diplomatic approach, like the one you mentioned, for Fallout 1 & 2.

Myron rocks with one handed energy weapons (provided he got a few level ups and thus more AP).

Update: great record! Don't expect to find everything in a first run through (it took me years).;)

Go back to the computer in Vault City, there is a nice bonus there.

Diplomat is a lot of fun. You'll like it.
