    LoL Morningstar! :D

Larrson is the only player in Scottish football that could play in the upper echelons of the Prem ;)

Why doesn't he move? It's surprising that he hasn't got bored by now tbh.

    Newcastle are my team ;)

Given my favourite team (English professional football team) has an American up front, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out who I support.

Sure, Sure, Sure...we'll call it football, it's that sport where they kick a round ball around a field, and we'll call American Football, "The Sport that makes all the money"!

Played soccer (why not use the IOC name), played American football, have to say that as far as physical talent goes...team sport...Basketball. As far as brains and strategy go...team sport...Baseball.

I understand that soccer is the "World Sport", that's because it's cheap and easy to play. It will never be the broadcast force that American football is because it doesn't translate well to that medium...and that's where the success and money is in this millenium.

We have just had a relative success in the states with the movie "Bend it like Beckham", now a lot of people know who David Beckham is (he married a Spice Girl, right :p ), but bear in mind, that the characters that idolized him in the movie where a bunch of young girls . It was about a girls soccer team.

Don't get me wrong, I couldn't run up and down that field like professional soccer players do, but I just don't see how it showcases physical accomplishment like some other sports. Soccer is a TREMENDOUSLY popular sport here in the US, but no one practiclally plays it who is older than 12. The term soccer mom has come to mean a middle-aged suburban mother who has little kids in an AYSO soccer league. It's part of our culture...but grown-ups play something else.

I'm not trolling or trying to get flamed...just want someone to explain to me what the big deal is.

@Grey Hey, I'm from New Orleans!!! Of course I love the Saints! Well, they aren't doing too good right now, but they put a hurt on Tampa Bay, the defending Super Bowl champs, so I'm happy! *celebrates*

Football combines all of them, it's like a game of chess. You must have talent to do somethings with the ball (see Van Basten's goal in the european cup final of 1988 Holland vs Soviet Union or Maradona's goal in world cup of 1986 Argentina vs England). It is more team sport than the basketball, where one player can change the fate of the team and win games all alone (Michael Jordan, Larry Bird etc.). This cannot happened in football. As far as strategy is concerned, I don't know about baseball, but football is the ultimate strategy game. You have to take strategic decisions before the game and during the game. You have to decide when you'll play a defensive game and when an attaking game, you have to decide if you'll play fast or slow, you have to find the disadvantages of the opponent etc. But the thing that makes football the most popular is that the best doesn't win always, David has always a chance against Goliath and that is something that doesn't happen in other sports.

Perhaps in U.S.A. but in Europe things are different. Each of the clubs, which participate in UEFA Champions League, takes almost 300.000 Euros just for the participation. Where do you think all this money comes from? Yep, from tv and sponsors.

Sorry guys, not trying to hurt anyone. Never saw the appeal of Football, (that better, Morningstar...btw...loved "Bravheart"), just seems like a bunch of guys that run up the field and then back down the field.

I actually do understand the strategy as it relates to Eu football, just don't see how it can compare to baseball. Eu football is much like ice hockey...very fast and hinging on each play and action. Just don't see the chess match in it.

The current contract between the NFL, NBA and MLB is tallied in the millions, not hundreds of thousands...not sure how the dollar relates to the euro...
BOC...don't get me wrong...I'm not finding American football ahead of World football...I've seen Michael Jordan play and I've seen Pele play, and the degree that MJ's personal athleticism and ability affected the outcome of the game was far greater than any thing I've seen in soccer.

Your post very clearly states that the strategy for Eu football is very much like hockey. Money or revenue wise...I would have to say that one NFL playoff game makes more $ from it's broadcast than the entire world cup (we American's like our beer, cars and soft drinks ;) )Anyway, my friends...I am open to more educating :) . Now I'm in trouble...I have earned the animosity of both our soccer fans and hockey fans!

    Nice post BOC :)

    But...

    Mention not 'The Great Cheater!'

That the 'Hand of God' goal was allowed to ruin Englands chance of winning the World
Cup a few years ago was a travesty of justice and football!! ... I'm not bitter or anything.

But when he scored the goal where he took about 5 defenders and placed in a wonderful finish was simply pure class. Have to bow down to quality when you see it, whether Cheater or No ;)

@Morsmodre: Yeah but the main thing is England lost, *Cheers* ;) :p
(I'm kidding, my pops is English and they are always the second team I support when Scotland go out.)

@Hacken Slash: I'm gonna take it as a typo that you typed "soccer" instead of "football" at the end there (PS, yeah, it wasnn't a bad film, historically inaccurate and filmed in Ireland, but still pretty damn good!)

    @Hacken Slash

Each player is a pawn. He has a certain role in the field depending on his abilities and the strategy that the team follows. Each player depending on his role moves in a certain area of the field and he has certain orders that he has to follow. An attacker or a middlefielder, for example, will never be the last player of the defense lines (if that happens then things are not going well for his team). I don't know if the strategies in ice-hockey are the same, since my knowledge on this sport is below zero. The same happens with baseball. I cannot see or understand the strategies in baseball since I don't even know the rules of the game. The picture of baseball to me is the following. One player throws the ball, another player tries to hit with his club, another tries to catch the ball and throw it back, while the player, who hit the ball, runs from base to base. Sincerely I cannot see any strategy or brain in this but I guess is something similar with your "they kick a round ball around a field" view of football :) .

Now as far as the the economical part is concerned, the 300000 Euros that I mentioned in my previous post are 3000000 euros, I forgot to type a 0  . They are the bonus the each one of clubs earns just because it participates in the league. The contracts between UEFA, clubs, sponsors and everyone else involved in the whole thing, are tallied in milions as well. For example the estimated total revenue of the next european cup is estimated in 800 milions euros. One dollar is almost one euro.

    @Morsmordre
I meant the second goal of course, not the hand of god ;) .

When I was a kid, I was a die hard Philadelphia fan(Football,Baseball,Hockey,Basketball) After many years of disappointment, I quit watching sports :( I started watching Football again in my 20's and decided to pick a new team. I chose the San Francisco 49ers and they won the Super Bowl that year  Been a fan ever since :D

Lol Morningstar, np :) ;) :D England tend to flatter to decieve most of the time (should have won the last World Cup *mumble grumble*)

Going on the amount of time you will support each time though, that must make England your first team ;)

'Round One Wonder's' Scotland are usually pleased with the sight-seeing ;)

J/K, Scotland are a quality team with a great manager *ahem*

    (no offence meant ;) )

We'll see that next saturday ;)

Go holland, it's been a while that we've been on a major tournament. A team full of miljonairs who are playing for the money not for the sport should be able to beat the country who love soccer really really much and play to win.........................................................................right?!

    Maybe in your dreams...
Holland does not play as well as they should, but the matches against Scotland are just a formality :p :spin:  :p
