@ Sorvo -If you look at the recent D&D - What Edition thread you will find many of us stating our preference for the old red/blue boxes. Mind you, I only got the white crayon too.

Oh, and I have to agree with Harbourboy about Jaguar being too young to qualify for this geezer thread, my brother was born in 84 and the differences between how things were when he was growing up compared to when I was growing up just 8.5 years earlier were enormous. I would say that I barely qualify and I was born in the mid-70s. Video games and computers were already starting to filter into common use by the time that I started school.

    Edit: Corrected absolutely horrible grammar.

Not that I got more than 3 channels until just very, very recently...

Bah! You young people these days, with your computers and running water and toilets and electricalicity. Well, let me tell you – you’ve got it EASY!! When I was young, I had to milk cows. Chop down trees and build houses. Plow the fields. Shear the sheep. And all that was done BEFORE NOON!!

Nowadays, all you have to worry about is whether you have enough Cocoa Puffs for breakfast, and making sure your various body piercings have rings in them or whatever the hell else you use. And don't even get me started on respecting your elders.

    Lousy little punks.

    *grumble mutter grumble*

    :p

    @Splunge

HA! I Still had to milk cows, feed the sheep, plow half the field and split 30 trees. This was all when I went home last week. I have NO channels, one t.v. and didn't even know about major electonics until I was about 14 and my school finally got a computer system. Getting to school consisted of walking 3 miles every morning to get on a rickety bus to ride another 20 miles just to get to town to walk half a mile to get to the school. Work at home starts at 5:30am and ends whenever it gets to dark to see. Even then you still have to check water and the haystacks so that the deer don't eat everything in site.

Only born in 83 but I think that I might actually have a claim to this thread.

Arahar - what you're talking about is what it's like to live way out in the country. That's got nothing to do with being born before the 1980s. You barely remember the Cold War. You actually had a computer at school. You don't even remember Arnold Schwarzenegger BEFORE he became an actor, let alone a politician.

Good on ya for working hard on the farm, but that doesn't make you a pre-80s kid.

Hah, hows this before Arnold became an actor he was in the army of which he got in trouble for going awol. The reason he went awol was because he left his base for a couple days to go win his FIRST competition.

Btw the cold war is still in action :D

Time for this old codger to step to the plate.

During the summer my mother would throw me out of the house around 9am and tell me to be back for dinner. I got on my bike, met some friends, stopped somewhere for lunch and made it home by the appointed hour. Not once did my mother have to worry about us.

Trips to the library were a big deal.

I thought the Atari 2600 was the greatest thing I had ever seen.

There was no talking when the weather came on the television.

I and my friends actually had paper routes and we had to go around and collect the money.

Sneaking peeks at a Playboy was the greatest fun.

Dad worked full time and Mom worked part time. To the best of my knowledge we never lacked for anything.

Some of my Dad's favorite quotes

"What do you think I am, your entertainment director?"

"If your bored, bang your head against the wall"

"Who is in the mood for Dairy Queen"

There was no such thing as T-ball and organized sports for pre-schoolers. I don't think little league started until fifth grade.

PTO meetings were packed and big time social events.

Parents would wear their good clothes to teacher conferences.

    I was born in 1967.

Even though I was born 1980 the fact that I was born in Sweden and not the US means that everything happened a little later here. During the summer not many hours was spent at home indoors but out playing and bathing in the sea and running around doing various sorts of mischief. We had one TV and because we lived near Denmark we had *four* channels on it! Two Swedish and two Danish, one of the Danish ones even showed commercials and oh was it exciting to watch commercials!

I agree with Joacqin. I was born in '87 here in Sweden and we only had three channels. We didn't get a video game until after we learned to speak English and being inside while it was bright outside would give you the five-fingers over your eyes.

That said, my mum was a nutcase, and she still is. And that isn't just my teenage-rebellios mind talking, psychologist who I have talked with have deemed her paranoid.

As the oldest known poster (even if only occasionally) I gotta post to this.

We didn't have a TV until I was 18. Neighbors had one and sometimes we'd go watch-mostly wrestling with a tiny screen.

I lived in the country, milked cows and goats, helped in the garden. Hated corn fields, horrid places to work.

I didn't have to walk to school, only maybe 1/2 mile to catch the bus. Went to a 2 room school until the 6th grade.

Spent most of my time outdoors. Had a pony until 11 and then a horse. Went barefoot except in the winter and trips to town. Town had 5000 people in it.

Computers barely existed and I think only the government had one. IBM cards were being used when I got a job at 18. IIRC Airlines were beginning to use computers.

Was it a hard life? No! It was a lot of fun. You don't miss what you never knew. Would I want to go back? No. I love technology. Couldn't live without my PC. :alien: I could make myself sound even older than I am but that's because I am really from the Alpha Quadrant.

I have all you beat -- I remember this skit ;) (although I've only copied the last of it)....

    FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt.
    SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at six o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of 'ot gravel, work twenty hour day at mill for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would thrash us to sleep with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!
    THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
Well, of course, we had it tough. We used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick road clean wit' tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two wit' bread knife.
    FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.
    FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you.
    ALL:
    They won't!

lol! I was actually trying to find that one earlier to post here, but no luck. :D

Well put, Nakia. And of course, like you, all things considered, I would never want to go back to the "good old days". But if we could "pick and choose"...
