I got my english education from RPG's and other computer games (non action). I learned english (and history) from Civilization (the first) when I was still in grade school (sp?, the one before high school). It was that moment on school where we (non english) first had to lean english words and I had such an advantage over all my students because of games like civilization.

And of course when you actually understand and can enjoy Planescape:Torment you know you understand enough english to get you by.

I find that playing Adventuregames and RPG's supplies a constant source of inspiration (together with books, movies. But those games take up a great part in my source of inspiration). I am doing my IGCSE in art this year, and I cannot say I lack inspiration. The only problem *I* have, is to find out how I can best express these ideas.

Another student in my Art class had problems getting an idea, what he could do for the art IGCSE, while I had already started colouring.

I have been summoned... None shall stay the strong swift sword of the English Teacher!

The only way that games lower GPAs is when students game excessively, at the cost of doing classwork and homework. I teach a college freshman writing class, and I distinctly remember the day that Halo 2 came out - mostly because only 1/4 of my male students attended class that day due to all-night Halo sessions after the midnight release here.

Well, not to be rude or anything, but with things like "i got more important classes" (just scary), the massive run-on that your first sentence is, and words like "done" and "konw" in your post, you might rethink your assessment of your English expertise. :shake:

Besides, if you're so advanced, than keeping up with the work should be no problem at all - indeed, staying ahead of the game should be easy - do all your work early and then game for the rest of the year!

At any rate, language/literature/writing classes are VERY important. They provide us with the the tools needed to communicate in an increasingly global community that depends on the written word more and more every day.

But I'm not getting on this soapbox right now - I've got classes to teach. :book:

No, using "than" in place of "then" and vice versa is just one of those things that assults my sensibilities for some reason. I always notice it <shrug> :)

Ugh, I've been using English for the better half of my life (ok, not that long, but still) and I still use those (then & than) at random as the mood strikes me. Fal, you *teach* English? Someone explain it to me. preferably in a way that a toddler could understand.

    Okies...

    IF this, THEN that

    RATHER this THAN that

    Does that make sense?

"Than" is a conjunction used in comparisons. "Dark beer is better than light beer."

"Then" is an adverb denoting time. "Falstaff drank the beer, then drank yet another."

    Mmm. Beer.

I am going to an international school in germany. Most subjects are taught in english.

The head of the school once said, that they have noticed, that children that learn english as their second language, often achieve better grades in it, than children whose first language is english, do. This is probably because when you learn it as second language, you have to learn it all from the beginning, and can learn it correctly. If a language is you first language, and you hear people around you speak it, you are automatically influenced by it, and might learn some things incorrectly. This has to be learned again in school, and this time correct.

I am native german, and I have found that my english grades are indeed better than my german grades. But now that I am in 11th grade, the difference between the scores has become less, and I am nearly equally good in english and german alike.

Thats because you are influenced by the colloquial form of expression in your first language.
The written form of language that is tested in schools and later, is graded based on stupid friggin rules which were made in the time when all those bastards were freezing their asses in unhygenic pest infested shacks with no central heating. Nothing else explains the idioticy that is grammar. [/rant]

She'd fail him on either general priniciples or the simple fact that he can't spell properly/she can't read his writing.
