    Well allright, if it's about dirt, then mountain gorillas do that as well! And they're genetically very close to our species!

    They climb a specific cliff face and eat the soil, or the mineral rich rock there. They get from the dirt the minerals their vegetable diet doesn't give them.

    If gorillas do it, why shouldn't we?

    Dirt or soil (not poo itself) can be rich in minerals. Plants 'eat' it and then animals eat the plants. What is a salt-lick but a specialised form of soil. I take vitamins and minerals. Now I wouldn't want to go dig up my back yard but then I wouldn't want to eat grubs either. Cultural thing really.
