I use glasses most of the time as they are the most convenient- putting them on doesn't require clean fingers or occasionally painful objects sitting on your eyeball. However, glasses can be a pain if going out (eg to a club) and I cannot do sport without contacts in: either sweat drips over the glasses so that I can't see properly, or I lose all my peripheral vision when on the trampoline (which is really not good). So a bit of a combination of the two for me, though I would consider laser eye surgery when I'm older and wealthier (I hope, anyway).

I meant I wore contacts in high school, and glasses since.

I'm slightly near sighted (I can actually drive without glasses as I passed the DMV eye test -- which is kind of scary) and only wear my glasses for distance vision. I take them off when I'm at my desk (I refuse to get bifocals). Contacts are bad because the correction would be constant and I'd be forced to wear reading glasses at my desk.

I'll do lasik when my near vision gets bad enough I need glasses for reading.

T2, while I'm sure they vary from state to state, I can speak of the DMV rules for PA and MD, the two states I have had driver's licenses in. Both of those states require that you cannot be worse than 20/40 vision in order to pass the eye test. Pefect 20/20 vision is not required. So if you are only slightly near-sighted, it makes sense you passed the test (assuming Illinois has similar sight requirements).

Chicks with glasses are sexy. Irrelevant, I know, but just wanted to say it. Majorly, majorly sexy. In fact, I used to <snip>

Maybe I should just save that story for the MUG!

I have heard some people having issues with Lasik, but they are in the vast minority. I'd say over 90% of the people I know who have had Lasik absolutely loved the results, and no one I've known who has had the procedure done in the last five years or so has had any problems.

My father-in-law took our 85 year-old and 73 year-old neighbors to get their licenses renewed in IL. They were not made to retake an eye exam. At their ages? That's nuts! Both are blind as a bat. This state is so @$$-backwards, it's scary.

I have reservations about long-term effects of LASIK. How long has this procedure been out for? I think I will wait and see on surgery. I will start with glasses, as I agree with Snook, I hate having anything in my eye, let alone a constant irritant. My eyes are sensitive just when I rub them, I think contacts would drive me nuts.

I heard of the first procedures when I was still in high school. When I was in college I dated a girl whose father had it done, and it wasn't exactly considered "new" then. I'd estimate it's been around for close to 20 years.

EDIT: According to wiki, the procedure became available in Europe in 1983, but was not approved for use in the US until 1989 - so about 21 years actually. Linky.

I'm about 20/20-25 in my left eye and 20/60 in my right, but I was able to pass the drivers test easily because you get to keep both eyes open for it.

Glasses all the way and this time I'm gonna take a proper heavy and noticeable pair, not the kind that half-disappears in photos or from far visual range.

I wear glasses, and I can't afford to switch to contacts :( If I could, I totally would. I hate wearing glasses.

I'm going to do LASIK as soon as I feel comfortable with someone popping my eye out, peeling it like an orange, and carving on it like a Thanksgiving Day turkey.

It depends on the girl more than it depends on the glasses. But some glasses can make a hot girl even hotter. :p

Seriously? Glasses can actually give you an air of seriousness. Besides I used to look much younger than my age and glasses did help with that.

I'm used to them now (I've got different pairs so I can switch depending on my mood). I can't wear contact lenses anyway and I can't afford not to wear glasses.

I wouldn't get unecessary surgery either.

I wore contacts for a bfief time when I was in my 20's, but my eyes couldn't handle them for more than a few hours, so I went back to glasses.

Glasses are a hassle, but I've been wearing them since I was 8 or 9, so the hassle is just something I've learned to accept.

    LOL! Nice....

    That sounds.....AWESOME!

I'll raise a glass to that. The ex has a really sexy pair of glasses. I have a picture of her wearing her glasses on Xmas morning...she looks exactly like Tina Fey. Huh, now that I think about it, I believe I was <MUG content> about Tina Fey as the ex and I <MUG content> later that day.

I was about to ask what that meant, and then I realized I haven't been following the (now-closed) Relationship thread. A belated "sorry to hear it didn't work out", Kit.

Glasses. I can't use soft contacts at all due to severe myopia and astigmatism, and gas permeable contacts suck.
I've looked at surgery, but with my family history of cataracts, that might now be the best move. I've been told by my eye doctors that LASIK can make lens replacement later in life very difficult.
