I have a pair of glasses for just taking on and off, driving etc, or when I'm going somewhere I don't care what I look like, ie just going round to my parents for dinner etc. it's just for convenience sake. I usually use contacts though, as I don't think I look very good in glasses, and certainly don't want them on if I'm going out somewhere.

I use monthly contacts for all sports and outdoor activities, but reading and computer stuff makes my eyes so dry i have to use glasses.
I have a huge astigmatism that makes both expensive as hell

If i buy cheap glasses, they are as thick as ground of a bottle.

Anyways, i couldn't enjoy sports with glasses as i do with contacts!! Beachvolleyball? Swimming? Swimming AND see persons??? no way.

I agree with Kitrax, laser surgey is the way to go if you have the money to spend. I checked locally and I do not have $1-3K to spend on laser surgey right now for one eye, forget two.

If you go with contacts you have the solutions to buy, new contacts to buy every so often, etc... Contacts cost more in the long run and your eyes may get irrated. Also, contacts are not for everyone.

Glasses - with the newer lens and frame they aren't all that bad. Also, if your lens have anti-glare it makes driving at night easier on the eyes as does working on the PC for extended hours. The other great thing is you pay once unless you break your frame.

If I could use contact, becuase I can't stand putting them in, I would. But I also like glasses for their anti-glare and the fact they don't require additional cost after the initial purchase.

Yes, love them compared to the old glasses, but they are expensive. I just got a new pair last year; Titanium ultra-light frames, micro-lenses (which are VERY thin), transitions into sunlight (no more sunglasses to lose), anti-reflection, which is great at night. But they were $800.00 complete, but my eye insurance company paid for them, so they only cost me $50.00 out of pocket. :)

Mine were about $350 getting a solid frame, the Teflon coating for anti-glare and all that jazz. At the same time I estimate my contacts for a year plus solution would equate to around $225.

    One has lasting power.

Glasses will be a PITA when you first get them as there is a very high likelihood that you will forget that you actually own a pair, specially during traveling. If you do get a pair then I hope you do not need to use public transport.

Luckily, the prices for ultralight fancy stuff has come way down. When I got my first titanium frame/high index lens glasses, they cost around $1000. I was a teenager at that time, and the price tag came close to making my mother faint. Still, having glasses that did not cause pressure sores on my nose made it worth the price tag.
These days, that same pair of glasses costs about $500. Pricey? Yes, but not as bad as they used to be.

Glasses. I've never fancied the idea of contacts: waking up in the morning and sticking my finger in my eye. :shake:

[IMG] It's even weirder when they're in and you poke yourself in the eye and can't feel it :D

Just don't do what a friend did and get intoxicated and struggle to get your lenses out before remembering you weren't wearing any in the first place. She had a few scratches

I actually don't have any choice. I have to wear glasses due to severe eye damage suffered in childhood. I was always told growing up that contacts weren't an option. I'm not sure if things have changed because I've had glasses all my life and couldn't see myself switching now, even if it were possible.

Neither! So far *knocks on wood*

I have a glasses prescription though - +0,25 dioptres left, and -0,25 dioptres right, or vice versa. That is, considering all the time I spend in front of computer screens I am fairly certain that I will need glasses, in ten years or so.

But you don't have to do that if you use the extended wear type (which I think is most common these days). You just get up and go. :)

I have an appointment to get my eyes checked next week. If necessary, which I am sure it will be, I think I will go the Glasses route. I have a deskjob, so no worries about work or breakage. And I do like the idea of getting the transitions into sunlight option.

If you need them for work, definitely go glasses. Contacts get very dry very quickly when you're stuck in an office in my experience!

I've needed glasses since I was 9, and bought myself contacts when I got my first real job, um, a number of years ago. Pluses and minuses for both. I've not considered Lasik as my money and number of eyes is limited.

Cost is similar -- I have astigmatism, and can't wear disposables, but they last about 1-2 years with daily cleaning (but the cost of solutions adds up). You can't really say that you will save the money of glasses, though, because you will want a backup pair. Your backup glasses will not need to be replaced with with every change of prescription, so they will last a while.

Durability -- I've had few problems with either. I think I've only had one pair of glasses break, and that was the frame, and only tore one contact lens that I remember.

Comfort -- Glasses get heavy on my face, even with plastic lenses. Contacts are drying for me if left in too long.

Vision -- My vision is actually better with glasses, I have to say, especially close vision, and I now have bifocals. The contacts I have don't come in bifocals, so one eye is corrected for distance and the other for close. It works better than it sounds. The lenses have to sit a certain way due to my astigmatism, so when they move, sometimes my vision is blurred.

As for the poke in the eye, you get over that by about day two. Don't be a baby. :nono: ;)

    Glasses or Contacts

I just have a stigmantism so Contacts aren't really needed. I don't mind them either. My frames are so light I almost never notice them

Contacts, definitely. Been using them (not the same pair, mind you :D) since 6th grade. Got conjunctivitis four times since, but it's still better than the need to take the glasses off before, well, doing almost anything that is fun (not counting reading or writing, heh heh). Being half - blind most of the time is just not cool!;)
