    AC72 isn't that hard to achieve, really.

    A deep gnome Rogue/Illusionist (with strong emphasis on Illusionist) with maxed DEX reaches AC61 at the end of Normal mode.
    Chain of Drakkas +7,
    Ghost Armor +5,
    DEX +9 (base 23 or 24 with Chimandrae's Slippers),
    Shield +4,
    Dodge & Expertise & race +10,
    Haste & Barkskin +9 (with lvl 12+ Druid),
    Brazen Bands & Fire Dance amulet & Swing from the Masts +7
    Total = 61

    In HOF mode, you'll get +2 extra via maxed DEX, +4 extra from better versions of the headband & amulet and +1 extra from the HOF version of Chain of Drakkas for a new total of 68.

    Finally, add Tenser's Transformation, and presto! AC reaches 73-76 at once, depending on how lucky you get with the Tenser's DEX boost roll.

    It's even easier if you use a Monk/Rogue/Dreadmaster combo as you get the WIS bonus to play with.. Such a build is quite a bit more stat-intensive, though, since you need to max WIS as well.
