    The overarching link between humanitarianism and animal rights is a respect for life, though after that there is a great deal of divergence. But getting back to education . . .

    If you compare countries with solid public education systems with those without, you see a lot of people in the latter countries who are really, REALLY badly off. Most research I have seen shows that the more education an individual receives, the more financially and socially stable that individual turns out to be. I'm not saying that public education is perfect -- believe me, I've taught for long enough to know and be bitter about its many flaws, but the alternative (education only for the elite) is much, MUCH worse.

    I would venture to say that some of the parents who want to keep little Johnny home are people with pretensions of grandeur.
