A bidet is nice after a heavy crap. Its function as a secondary toilet is second to none since it does two things extra: First, the trip down the stairs resulting in waking up is negated. Second, no need to lift the seat. One slight technical problem: It is located in my fathers house.

No bathroom is complete whit one.

    WHAT?!?! :hahaerr:
For some reason, I find that funny...

I for one have no disire to ever use a bidet...seems like a cold breeding ground for poo-germs. :bad: There's no way in hell I would ever use such a device after someone else had used it prior (even if it had been for days). :bad:

LOL! And the shower is different in what way exactly? :shake: Both need to be cleaned regularly, you know. :p The feeling of bidet phobia in the air here is too funny. A bidet is a handy mini-shower fixture which you use for exactly the same purposes as a shower - to clean yourself up. No gremlins springing from the tap, I promise!

But sure, like you can have unclean showers, you can have unclean bidets. You'll only normally see bidets in houses/apartments, where they'll only be used by the same small group of people, who will keep them clean. You won't see bidets in public WCs or gyms and the like. At least not in Europe, some other countries have different customs in this respect.

Usually just once per day for me, though always at night time; I can't sleep while feeling muggy.

I do not see the point of a bidet. That is what I have a shower for. It's not bidet-phobia, it's just silly to waste precious bathroom space having loads of separate devices for cleaning different parts of the body. Why not have a leg washer and an ear washer and a hair washer and a face washer and a tummy washer? It's just pointless.

I usually don't shower after dropping the kids off at the pool... and if I do, I've already cleaned myself up down there with toilet paper...so there's no brown trail running down my leg and in to the drain. :shake:

    Prove it! :p

If you've got a small bathroom, then sure, you have to make compromises and the bidet would go. You've already got "loads" of separate devices in the bathroom, no matter how basic. A bidet is a leg (well, feet) washer also. And the difference in the use is obvious (well, I guess less so to those who've never used it.)

Of course, convincing someone who's never used it or hasn't seen it used in their country of its many benefits is usually futile. I suggest reading the links I've posted.

Reading the replies against it here just makes me shake my head because it reminds me of the attempts to convince my aunt to get a microwave... You just can't get through to someone who refuses to acknowledge the fact that just because the stove is bigger, everything should be heated there or nowhere. :shake:

LMAO, you tell her, Barms! Instant classic!

But a slap on the wrist for telling the truth? Ehh, what's the point? Oh, I forget, people can't take the truth. Silly me.

Buuut back on topic, the fatass chick I work with at work smells absolutely horrible. Think of a dead Marlin on a beach under the sun on a 40+ degree day. Someone actually filed a complaint to the HEAD OFFICE!!! LMAO!

    She still stinks, BTW.

Perhaps my understanding of the bidet is flawed, but it is like a toilet, right? You sit on it like a toilet and then activate it, and water shoots up and hits your butt crack. Then the fouled water goes back down right onto the jet. That's the idea, correct? That's where my sanitation alarm goes off. With a shower, the water starts at the top, hits the body and gets fouled, and then goes down the drain -- it doesn't hit the shower head.

Logically, I'm sure that the bidet is just as sanitary as the shower in terms of angles and such, but the idea is still a difficult one to wrap my North American head around. If I ever come to Europe, I'll give one a try. I'm open to new ideas.*

*SOME new ideas, that is -- I have limits!

I know it just makes me sounds like an old stick in the mud, but I cannot see how the bidet would improve my life. I can see how an internet enabled phone would, or a blu-ray player, or digital SLR camera, or new shelving in the garage, but a bidet? I still don't see the point and even the usually sane Taluntain has not been able to provide any useful explanation.

It's just another convenience item. You have a lavatory (sink) to clean your arms, hands, face, ears, nose, eyes and even hair in a quick manner without having to get completely undressed. It would be pretty difficult to use a lavatory to clean lower regions of the body (including legs and feet) in this way, so a bidet is the item that allows for this.

If you prefer to get completely undressed and have a bath or shower rather than have a bidet to do quick cleanups like you'd use a lavatory for, well there's not really anything wrong with that, but I think you can see the utility...yes?

[IMG] I can see how a bidet may appeal to many people. They don't seem to be around in the UK though. I'd still say it's more a luxury than a neccessity however.

I'm not even going to consider responding to some of the other... disturbingly intimate comments in here :mommy:

Not quite. The majority of the bidets sold here have a tap in front; this makes the whole thing somewhat more versatile in its uses than if the water only shoots from below, and it functions more similarly to your regular sink (though since the water stream in both versions is constant, any dirt washes off in a matter of seconds anyway). See this pic for the kind of bidets popular here:

The nozzle of the tap is usually adjustable in any direction.

Doesn't get much better than BTA's explanation.

To quote Mr. Bidet from the page I've already linked:

After elimination, it is impossible to cleanse the rectal/vaginal areas with dry toilet paper. Warm water is obviously a better cleansing agent than the softest, prettiest or costliest toilet paper available. Any family laundress or personal valet can testify to this statement.

Toilet paper has been perfumed, decorated in color, sterilized and made antiseptic, but nevertheless, it is still dry paper and only a step better in evolutionary improvement than the pages of the mail order catalogue or the barbaric plantain leaf.

If it is routine to wash one's hands after using the toilet, is it even not more logical to wash one's bottom? Babies always have their bottoms washed clean, powdered and pampered. However, upon graduating from infancy to the stage of self reliant childhood, they are permitted to revert to the medieval custom of wiping and dry toilet paper.
