    Yes - the very idea of there being legitimate blame for being ignorant of what may offend someone seems to suggest that it is never safe to say anything to anyone, because it's possibility that anything might offend anyone, and to be ignorant of all those possibilities is basically a given. So yes, I'd actually say it's an entirely valid excuse to say that you weren't aware that rutabaga was an offensive word to Uncle Jimmy and that you owe no apology in that scenario. Ignorance certainly is an excuse in that context.
