I don't see why you called this off topic, it has very much to do with the whole issue.
A paintball goes at a speed of probably 200 km/h (125 mph). If it hits the eye socket, it goes straight through. The eye can't never withstand such presure. The paintball hitting the eye, does not explode, for the eye is to soft, instead it stays a ball, and doesn't loose much of it's speed. If you have enough strength, you should be able to push someone eye to their brain, with your bare hands (do not try this, unless you want to be in jail for the rest of your life). If your friend survived this, and kept his sight, he is probably the luckiest man alive. The paintball must have hit that boney part under the eye first, before coming into contact with the eye, or with such an angle, that is was able to bounch. If it goes straight in, it goes straight through, there are many cases to prove it.

to calculate the force on a surface, you must both know the velocity and the mass of an object. And of course the size of the area of impact if you want to calculate the pressure per square-inch which is what we should be looking for. That the speed is 125mph is not a complete scientific argument.

That said, hunting bambi is sickening to say the least. Still, if it is a hoax, it is a good way to lure and spot physcos so we can give them the proper treatment. If they are potential costumers for this horrible act of sadism, they might as well drift out of sanity elsewhere, unnoticed. Perhaps it is started by the FBI :shake:

Well, I don't think there's a need to go and search for the exact kinetic formula. An object flying with that velocity will certainly cause damage when it hits the eye. And certainly go through it, when hit in the right angle. So, luck or unluck decides how severe the injury is going to be.

I'm with BTA on this one.

I don't personally care for it. Some people like to be tied up and whipped and spanked. I don't particularly care for that, either. At some point (I usually draw the line at life/death/maiming), there are fantasies and fetishes that need some kind of release.

A holodeck would be nice. But we don't have that, just yet.

    Whatever.

Particles from the sun hit you with the speed of light and still don't penetrate your skin... OF course my rational mind says that it must destroy the eye and most like do damage too. So we agree. Still I just had to poke to the scientific lack or argumentation in just mentioning velocity and nothing else as the reason for causing brain damage.

Hm, I am walking on thin ice. But I remember vaguely that exposure of skin to sunlight may cause cancer of the skin because of the mini-damage the sun-particles cause. And a lot of other mini-damage is just irreleavant, but damage.

But anyway, any object with a certain size and a certain velocity or other form of energy is most dangerous for the eye. If it wouldn't be this way, mother nature wouldn't have taken so much care to protect them with an interesting skull-form. But curiousity could be satisfied with an field-research. Some volunteers are taking shoots aimed at the head with that gun. Then we would have a statistical basis on the percentage of severe damage. Hey, there is already a field-research going on.

Without the proper protection-gear, that "sport" is dam dangerous, because aiming isn't one of most precise things.

Snopes updated July 19 and verified this as false.

I'd like to salute the hoaxsters. I'm relatively cynical and typically don't fall for this kind of thing. This time though I decided to trust the multiple media sources. They're still running stories about it as a matter of fact. I wonder if anyone has retracted the story yet?

Once again, if it sounds too crazy...

Thanks for the update. I can't tell you how glad I am to hear that it's not true. Especially that the company owner and the "hunter" who were interviewed were just kidding. I have not been a strident man-hating feminist since college but boy, hearing that unbelievable apologia of violence against women by "the wimps of America who say 'yes dear' to their wives" made me feel 19 and shrill again. Whew. My faith in guys has been restored.

Just so some people know who haven't played arena paintball, most places require that velocity be set at 275, max, and below, with no exeptions, they will cut the spring if they have to. I'm not protecting "hunting for Bambi" because the wounds can be horrific on bareskin, but they most likely have a set velocity on the guns just to make it safe. As for getting hit in the eye without goggles, it might be able to go into the brain but usually causes total blindness. As for hitting bareskin with paintballs, I played Sunday and after I got hit I was walking out and I was 5 feet from a bunker and the guy behind it didn't know i was coming and shot when i got near and it hit my forearm at a velocity of 267, the casing broke and cut my skin and the welt, sp?, is still red and haasn't even started to bruise up yet.

Also the gun and actual paintball effects the type of impact and resulting injury. Most arenas today sell specially made paintballs that are softer and break easily for less injuries. Those double as insurance policy and close combat play. On the flip side, some balls are made harder for higher velocity outdoor tournament play and travel long distances towards the intended target. Obviously we do not know what types of guns and paintballs are used, (Or do we, I only read part one) and since the targets have volunteered we just don't really know what can happen.

[Edit] I didn't read the last two posts and didn;t realize that they think its a hoax, though they are still running reports about that because my mom just recently called and asked if this was what spurred my interest in paintball, it isn't, and the radio just went over the whole thing without even mentioning that it might be a hoax

I agree completely. Those damn men and their hoaxes! Oh wait, I guess the hoax required the participation of some girls too. Geeze, hmmm, is it still okay to use this gag to hate men?

*shakes head* Wow. This is not only sickening, disgusting, and dangerous, but just plain idiotic. I mean the comment, "I don't go deer hunting and see a deer with a football helmet on so I don't want to see one on my girl either..." I mean seriously! I understand paintball, paintball can be fun. But it can also hurt, especially if you get in certain spots. . . so to have these girls going around naked and without even helmets? Seriously, who comes up with these kind of warped things? And although I'm fairly sure that the combo of sex and violence in this manner won't CAUSE mental illnesses (though mind you, I've only taken high school psychology) I have to wonder about the people doing this. And though people here talk about this is why humanity is pathetic, I kind of can't help but feel that these particular. . . participants are more sub-human than anything else. A very good example of what prevertion to nature means....

I still don't get why it's called "Hunting for Bambi". Bambi is a stag.
