Fallen Paladin, no, haven't seen that... but I know it happens, we've had our cats killed like that before.

Good grief, ArtE... the settlers brought along with them dozens of species of animals not native to America, and I'm sure cats were the first among them to keep the mice at bay.

My five cats have all been indoor cats, and like Darkwolf said in another post, I have a responsibility to give them a high-quality of indoor life. Which I fulfill with three carpeted cat "jungle gyms" that they can play on, climb, scratch, and chase each other around on. They also have a lot of toys, catnip, plastic balls and springs etc. Combined with a good diet and loving attention, they are perfectly content and don't even try to go outside.

My neighbours' cats are always trying to get into my house, although mine are fixed so it's not like they smell a female in heat or anything like that. Nearly all the screens on my windows have been shredded by other people's cats gouging them from the outside. If I knew who owned the cats, I could maybe take action to recoup the cost of the damage, but the cats don't wear collars so I have no idea who is responsible.

They also poop in my vegetable garden, and since cat poop carries a parasite that can kill or disable an unborn child, this means I could neither eat my home-grown foods nor work in my garden while pregnant. A lot of gardeners sprinkle cayenne pepper to keep cats out of the garden, but cats can get the pepper in their eyes and blind themselves scratching it out, so I don't do that. It's not the cats' fault their owners are irresponsible pet-owners and bad neighbours.

But you know what I don't hesitate to do? Catch cats on my property, take them to the vet's at my own expense if they are injured or sick (which outdoor cats always seem to be), and then give them to the animal shelter. I know a lot of cat owners are outraged by this, but the heck with them. If their kids were vandalising my property, I'd call the cops. Since it's their cats vandalising my property, I deliver them to the Humane Society, where at least they have the chance of being adopted by a civilised and responsible person.

If you want to have a pet, take care of it, and don't let it become a nuisance to anyone else. End of story. I don't shoot cats but if one of my cats got onto someone else's property and was shot causing damage, I'd accept that it was my own fault for not keeping my cat home.

I personally have always thought a good cat is a dead cat.

    For your enjoyment [snip]

[You'd have to be pretty sick to enjoy that.] -Tal

EDIT- Tal has no sense of humor. It was a link to a flash game where you shoot a cat out of a cannon.

[To have it splatter into a bloody pulp on a number of spikes sticking out the floor. Very funny. Not.] -Tal

That's highly unusual. There have always been other people's cats all around our house, but they've never tried to get inside... even when the door's wide open it's rare for it to happen.

Talk about a generalization... We've always had cats that could roam freely, and they were never injured or sick any more than any cats you'd keep inside. Of course, now and then you'd get an injury in the mating fights, but that's natural and normal, and can be taken care of by responsible owners. I live in a street where practically everyone has at least one cat roaming freely. There are at least 6 or 7 cats of our neighbours I frequently see around. And none of them are sick or injured in any way. So the cats you've encountered might really have been strays, but no responsible cat owner who lets it roam is going to just let it live injured or sick. I'm not sure, but there seems to be a common theme with indoor cat owners of supposing that cat owners who let their cats roam don't care if their cats are sick or injured and similar nonsense like that. As if we loved our cats any less because we let them roam.

Also, calling people who don't lock their cats inside "uncivilised and irresponsible" (paraphrased) is also pretty rich. Please refrain from making similarly offensive statements in the future. If your philosophy is that it's better to keep a cat locked up inside, mutilate it by declawing and neutering it and basically make a cute living toy only vaguely resembling a real cat out of it, that's fine, nobody here will call you a cat torturer. So please extend the same courtesy to the other side.

You know what Sprite, I think you inspired me! Seriously! I have not seen a cat lurking in my back yard in some time now, but with summer coming on I am sure that I will see more. I think I will buy a humane animal trap, and deliver any cats that start frequenting my yard to the Humane Society.

With five new houses going up right now within sight of my house, I just can't continue to shoot them.

Thanks! And thank your for being what I consider to be a great pet owner. You can be my neighbor any time (except for that fact that I don't think you want to move to the US), and if my karma is to live my next life as a cat, I hope it is as one of your cats. ;)

It amazes me how much I see of people like The Great Snook, who really have no respect for animal life -- who would actually get enjoyment out of seeing an animal killed -- or would like to watch a game of it on their screen. That scares me a great deal. I feel very sorry for you Snook. It's so sad. :(

Tal, remember that I'm talking about a very big city with lots of traffic, as well as a country with very cold winters, so maybe your experience is different, but illness and injury in the outdoor cats in this neighbourhood are definitely the norm. Most of the cats roaming the streets in my neighbourhood have signs of frostbite and often have injured paws from trying to claw their way into a warm place. My husband brought in a cat that had lost both ears and his tail to frostbite and had had all its front teeth knocked out. It wasn't a stray - he knew who the owner was in that case but refused to return the cat since it was obviously being ill-cared for. Several times now pregnant cats left outside overnight have had kittens in my shed because it was the only shelter they could find, and the kittens had weeping infected eyes and horrendous parasite infestations by the time I found them. If you don't think that's an uncivilised and irresponsible way for people to look after their pets, then we have very different definitions of what constitutes acceptable treatment of animals.

But I agree with you on declawing. I think it should be illegal to cut a cat's fingers off.

Not all indoor cats are declawed. I've had all indoor cats that have never been maimed in that way (and yes, I don't have the prettiest furniture around). I also know quite a few vets who refuse to do the surgery, as it is considered "maiming" by them. I do know a few families who have had it done -- I voice my opinion to them and try to deter them -- but in the end it's the owner's ultimate choice -- and one I'll never agree with.

Sprite, as I said, that may be your experience, but I live in a relatively small town and nearly everyone takes care of their cats. What you're talking about pretty much seems to be stray cats, or cats their owners don't give a damn about. But that's hardly an indication of the norm for all the cats who are allowed to roam (or rather their owners). As I said, all the cats in our neighbourhood are allowed to roam, and they're all fine and healthy. All the cats that are actually cared for by anyone will come inside the house to have kittens. I know - we've had several female cats in the past, and they've all come inside when it was time. You seem to be under the misconception that cat owners who allow their cats to go outside keep them outside all the time. That's not the case (at least not with anyone I know of). The cat is simply allowed to go in and out as it pleases. And it knows very well to come inside when it's hungry, when it wants to sleep, cuddle, or litter (in the case of female cats). Keeping cats outside all the time is something I would consider "uncivilised and irresponsible", but that's not the way anyone around here does it. That's why I warned you to be careful about generalizing and labelling cat owners. Also, spaying or neutering them is definitely a good thing to do, as it solves a number of problems all at once (we actually had to do it with our tom because of medical issues). But that's as far as I'd go.

Off topic, but what people enjoy in a game--even a flash game--can be quite different from what they enjoy IRL.

See: Postal, Grand Theft Auto, Carmaggedon, etc.

I giggle when I dismember a pedestrian in Carmaggedon. I sure as hell wouldn't giggle if I actually hit a pedestrian with my real car.

Gee! I feel silly. When I saw the topic, I thought we were talking about fairly large and wild cats, like mountain lions, pumas...

Oh nice job AMaster. I was going to use "Flash" games as my excuse to go "Columbine on the boards" and now you ruin my defense :) .

In all honesty, I will admit I consider humans on the top of the food chain. If I ever have to make a decision between a human and an animal (even a beloved pet) the human wins. I have a friend who was seriously injured in a car accident as he swerved and rolled his car (a VW bug) in an attempt to save the life of a "dumb cat" that ran out into the road. I would have just run the stupid thing over. If that means I have no respect for animal life than so be it. I have more respect for human life.

However, to ease the concerns of our animal loving friends, the next time I play NWN I will try to use non-violent means to combat the animals that attack in the wilderness (bears, wolves, etc.). Although I may still go after the ones with the word "dire" in front of their names, as I think that means they are evil.

The link was removed because we have a clause in the forum rules against posting obscene material, and I consider that game to be just that. The only element in that game was killing cats in a disgusting manner. The other games mentioned at least have some other redeeming qualities. That one doesn't, end of story.

And as long as you just stick to killing in games, no one really gives a damn what you do with animals there.

Also, what's with all the nonsense about "If I ever have to make a decision between a human and an animal (even a beloved pet) the human wins". As if anyone sane would put an animal before a human life if a life was actually at stake.

Swerving on the road not to hit an animal (or anything else on the road, for that matter) is a reflex action. A person would have to be very, very harshly conditioned to just calmy drive over a living creature on the road. And probably not quite right in the head either.

Anyway, all this nonsense is totally off-topic.
