The Beatles were a cultural besides an artistic revolution. If by "pop" you mean popular then I suppose they are. But if you do some cultural archeology, and compare two recordings that were released at about the same time: The Beatles' White Album/Zep I (1968, I think) and place them in their social, politcal and cultural contexts, then the weight of meaning would have to go to the Beatles. In fact, Zeppelin I would be very light weight in meaning. Of course, the Beatles were at their apex in 68, while Zep was just getting strated, so the comparision is a bit unfair. While they are both great bands, they are really different. Now, that may be less important from a purely artistic standpoint. But then we would have to get into the function of Art, and that would be... :yot: . But I would still be prepared to argue the significance of the Beatles vs. Zep on another thread.

I would most definitelly say that they liked (and still do) to experiment the various paths of music. Their last and IMHO one of their best albums (In through the out door) there is even a latin flavour in there.
So it is quite difficult to put them in one category only. They were unique.
And that was the reason they broke up when Bozo died. That chemistry would never happen again, the song would never be the same.

The Beatles are blues with slight psychedelia.

At least one thing is certain, Led Zepellin and Jimi Hendrix were the "creators" of heavy metal.
