You still do not get it, not even close and I will stop trying to convince you that there might be more to bad deeds than people with evil souls.

It has nothing to do with evil souls. That this happened is not surprising to conservatives. When you teach a group of people to just expect things to be given to them, it isn't that much of a stretch for them to believe that they deserve them and therefore it is perfectly OK for them to steal them.

Now the excuses people are making for them is that they are unemployed and if they had jobs they wouldn't be in this situation. However, the establishment of "benefits" have made it so many of them are getting by quite nicely without having to actually find a job or if they find a job they realize they aren't doing that much better then they were on benefits.

The Schutzstaffel had well over 200 000 members at the end of 1933. Now what do you think drove young men to such a movement especially considering the economic situation in Germany?

this is a really good analogy for the current situation, a crying baby. You can comfort the baby as much as you want, but some babies just cry.

Oh, I'm not excusing them because they are unemployed. I'm saying it's a contributing factor to their unhappiness. Since graduating from college, I've held a full time job with the exception of a five month period in my mid-20s when I got laid off from a job and was looking for a new one. This was back around the year 2000. I did collect unemployment benefits during that time. I don't know how the system works in England, but at the time, I was receiving about half of my previous salary from unemployment, so I wasn't someone who discovered "the establishment of "benefits" have made it so many of them are getting by quite nicely without having to actually find a job". Seriously Snook, I don't know where you come up with some of this stuff. You can have your salary cut in half and not have it impact your life? I was completely miserable and felt like a worthless human being. I can see how not having a job could lead to depression and other issues.

That said, I didn't go looting local neighborhoods. Not that there was any rioting taking place near where I lived at the time, but I would not have participated even if there was. So no - being unemployed is not an acceptable excuse to join a mob of people and act like Ghengis Khan and the Mongol Hoard in your neighborhood. But I can see how, if you've been out of work for a long time, that depression can give way to anger and jealousy, as many around you are leading a lifestyle you used to have when you had a job. It's not an excuse, but it is an enabling environment.

I think that prolonged/untreated depression generally leads to despondency - which makes you not care to get out of bed, not get inspired to go out and 'stick it to the man.' I would hazard a guess that not one of the London rioters is depressed. Disaffected maybe, but they're having too much fun to be depressed.
