Thay always reminded me, in ways, of Saudi-Arabia. If you look at the map, you'll see that Thay is mostly desert, save for the Thaymount. Rashemen, on the other hand, reminds me more of the part of Russia between Moscow and the Ural mountains. As for Minsc's accent, it definitely sounds Russian to me, and I think it suits him well. Why they'd choose to add such an accent, though, I assume, is because they wanted to add some real world "flair" to the game. Nowadays, games mostly consist of American or British accents, and I find that a bit boring, truth be told. Then again, few characters can live up to Minsc. :D

The voice actor who played Minsc also had a guest role in Codename: Kid's Next Door in which he played a character named Vin Moosk, an accountant who one day decided to rebel against the oppression of his employers by ripping off his itchy tie. His boss was furious and sent living ties after Moosk to subdue him, but Moosk ultimately defeated them and became a "Tie Hunter". Moosk even had a battlecry -- "Where Moosk goes, ties get the butt-kicking!" Hilarious. My sons still don't understand why I thought that episode was so funny.

I always thought he had a bit of a slavic accent, was never meant to be a secret or something. Clearly just trying to give some of the non-swordcoastians (?!) a different accent that would make some sense to us. Rasheman is cold and far to the east of Baldur's gate/sword coast, soo...

I mean Yoshimo looks and sounds Japanese, but that is only because Kara-Tur is essentially Faerun's version of Japan/asia. It's not meant to be an 'easter egg'.

Yeah, it was simply to add to the diversity, and stuff.
Would be dull as hell if some NPC is supposed to hail from the other side of the FR but sounds like ever other slob in Baldur's Gate.

And the Slavic or non rather non american accents are the ones that stick out the most i guess.

Yoshimo doesn't just sound Japanese, he actually speaks Japanese.

"Yokatta" means good. "So desu ne" is roughly "Is that so?"
