I can just about understand why they didn't tell the child at a young age. Other children at school would have found out if the kid had known. (How can you tell your child not to tell anyone without implying that it is wrong) As children are evil little bar-stewards this would have led to bullying/teasing. It would probably also lead to a certain amount of ostracism by other parents, which couldn't be good for a childs development.
I can't agree with Morgoth, the early Teen years is a very important part of development and finding this out could very easily lead to the kid going off the rails.

To a lesser extent, the same applies to adoption.
(At least with adoption you have the excellent rejoinder "At least I know my parents wanted me!")

To keep things in context, there are many, many far worse families the kid could have grown up in. The kid seems to be loved by both his natural mother and his "father" as well as his grandparents, the kid hasn't been abused, etc.

Was it so evil that the parents didn't say the "father" was actually a woman?

Leaving aside the gender-bending issue for a moment, would it be evil for a normal heterosexual couple not to tell their 12 year old child that his mother had conceived him using artificial insemination? Even if, while he was genetically related to his mother, he was not genetically related to his father, would that make his father any less his father? Should this non-biological father, who acts in every other way as the father of the child, and has from the moment the child was born, necessarily burden his 12 year old son with the knowledge he was born according to artificial insemination? Does it even really matter in this case?

It seems to me that there are a lot of other factors in this that would be far more damaging to this kid than that he was born using artificial insemination, and that his "father" was really a woman: 1) His parents divorced, with the added intimation that his "father" might have been a bit abusive to his mother; 2) His mother then took up with another guy, had a kid, and finally got married to yet another guy; and 3) Both parents seem to have "issues."

These last three facts would be difficult for any 12 year old, though they are common enough not to elicit any remarks. It's simply the strangeness of the extent to which the "father" strove to hide his/her identity from the world that makes this story remarkable.

Also, this post would be better titled "My dad is my mom's female partner" than "My dad is my mom": afterall, he never had any reason to doubt who his mom was...

@Bion, I don't think the opinions on this thread were meant to make it seem like artificial insemination was wrong on not justifiable in any case. I believe most people are shocked that for 12 years "Dad", was tossin the ball and acting like a typical father and then "bam" my dad is a girl. Regardless of how he acted, treated, behaved as for 12 years, the kid had to be shocked as hell.
No one said anything about it being "evil", just very strange and I think most people were actually speaking from a sense of concerns on how the kid is going to react and how it is going to be reacted to by society. You have to admit, society is cruel and this kid just got a bulls eye painted on his back.

As for the cruelty of society, or having a bullseye on one's back, it depends where one is from. Some places are more tolerant than others. The kid's new step-father is a novelist of some sort; I would guess that their friends and neighbors wouldn't be bothered by this, and that they've put the kid in a school where the students would be more tolerant as well.
