mazzy will be fine esspecially by the time you get to TOB even in melee. Mazzy has great dex, and good con. Give her a str belt and all of a sudden she is a great melee fighter. One thing I liked to do was when I got her I gave her a point in halberds as soon as possible. Then a second and then I started adding points into two handed weapon style. after I got some powerful halberds and a str item she was just as good or better than most anybody. Till that time I had her using the awesome shortbows that really allowed her to tear up people. The only thing Korgan really has on her is that his berserk gives him some good immunities for a little while but I prefer the mazzy.

I wouldn't suggest Unseeing eye. Tackling gauths may be suicidal in lowest levels. That is, if you have shield of cheese, another story.

^This from the 'gimme more mods' king. There are ways to kill gauths and beholders without resorting to 'the shield of cheese'...I mean, Balduran's shield. *I* do Unseeing Eye. I never said it was mandetory to do as your first quest.

Easy quests - Talk to the owner of the Copper Coronet. There are strange things going on in the back rooms. Talk to Telwyn at the temple of Helm and do some running for him.

Most quests can be put on hold until you return to Athkatla in chapter 6.

^ :shake: Heh, I really didn't think I was sounding so...'give me more mods! I want it harder!' :shake:

Anyway, using cheese is according to the player, if player feels free, he can do it, it is his game after all. SO if the player has fun, that is all that matters. I guess...

Gauths can be easily knocked flat on their bum by summoned monsters in the core game. Mislead will also paralyse them with confusion, and a few skull traps will take down even a beholder. I never realised there were so many ways to kill beholders before my current game. :)

I guess it pretty much depends on your style of play. Jaheira can soak a lot of damage with the right gear and spells, but I guess Mazzy can deal more damage hand-to-hand. Personally I would ditch Anomen too and go for both Mazzy and Jaheira. You should have enough divine powers with both a pally PC and Jaheira.

And no,you won't "need" a pure fighter in ToB. Jaheira can do the job just fine (to my experience you never need a pure fighter at any point. Personally I much prefer to have most of my characters either dualed or multiclassed if possible - but this is more, I guess, a personal thing, as I like the flexibility duals and multis provide).

As far as I'm concerned, you never "need" this or that. Since you can solo SoA with just about any character, you obviously don't need this or that. Fer ToB, fighters are very, very good, hence a fighter-type is very useful. Jaheira can be quite the tank. Multi-classed fighters work well overall, and since she's a druid as well, you get tons of extra protection spells etc. She doesn't do as much dmg as say Sarevok, but gear and spell her right and she'll definetly outlast him any fight of the week ;)

As olimikrig sais, multi and dual-classed characters give you more flexibility. After all, a pure class takes up one party slot with one class, whilst a double (or triple) classed character gives you two or three classes in one slot (less specialized, though that doesn't mean less versatile).

Jaheira is definitely a tank, and a very good one. She will be so durable, with best AC, saving throws, elemental resistances, ironskins, protection spells, very good summons (elemental princes), tons of healing and buffs etc. She is NOT as good as a pure fighter, she is even BETTER IMHO. Go for her!

I agree with Silverstar. As a tank, Jaheira is second only to Haer 'Dalis.

That sounds perfect. to recap my party will be
    Pally
    Sola
    Kelsey
    Jan
    Jahiera
Mazzy, who I will swap for sarevok in ToB.

I asked earlier what quests I should do before I go to the underdark. but I think the better Q is what level should my party be at so I can decide for myself what quests. thanks for showing such interest so far everyone.

Game will auto-balance the difficulty of encounters in the Underdark according to your level, so hopefully you won't get stuck. You need some decent items however, like at least +3 weapons and other useful stuff like Robe of Vecna, Shield of Balduran, a few wands, etc. etc.

They're sold by Dierdre (a bonus merchant) in the back of the Adventurer's Mart. If you've got ToB and the patch she should be there.
