    It was either late 90's or early in this decade.

    It is set in the 1800's post Civil War...

    Edit: The years were 1995-1996. I found that in a newspaper article I read online confirming the dates.

    It was referenced in a recent Toronto Star article. Since Bret is promoting his new book, there may be other references to his appearance on this show.

    There may have been a miniseries with the same name that predated the TV show...

    Actually I saw the article online.

    The Series was "Lonesome Dove".

    New clue:

    Robert Vaughn turned the title renegades legit, and sounded the death knell for this classic 1980's series.

    This is one of my all-time favourite TV shows EVER and I'll try to make it a bit easy cos of my sporadic visits so here goes:

    After escaping from an 'institution' of sorts where he had been held and trained since he was taken there at a young age, a man uses his genius and ability to assume any identity, any job, in order to help those in need while searching for his family
