As wildly off-topic as this thread has become, let me put my thoughts simply.

I've made my mind up that I am willing to donate my organs as it may save someone elses life. I don't want anybody else, including my loved ones, to be able to gainsay that.

I believe most people who sign up to be donors feel the same way, and the discussions on this board and with my friends seem to support my view. I struggle to understand why anyone would WANT someone else to make the decision for them therefore I don't agree with the assertion that this legislation will actually lead to fewer donor organs available - particuarly given the available statistics.

Regardless of someones personal views, I can't see why anyone has the audacity to believe they (or anybody else) should be able to prevent someones (quite literally) last gift to society. If you feel that strongly, talk them out of it. If you fail then it is extremely underhand to do it after their death!

To me, the law is fairer EVEN in the unlikely event that there are fewer donors.

    Edit:

The obvious solution to those people who don't want to take the responsibility themselves. Have an extra clause on the donor card where the person has the option of nominating a third party to make the decision for them. This could even be non-family as in Sho's current case.

I agree with Carcaroth; I think this law is a good idea - I'm a donor and I *want* to be a donor. I don't want someone else denying my final act to help others.

Admittedly, there are other people to take into consideration in this issue, and I have. My wife and my parents have no objection to my being a donor. The wife'd be one as well if her eyesight was good enough to hold a driver's license. ;) We should probably see about getting a specific donor card for her...

I allow that there may be a decrease in the number of donors, as the (hopefully) few people who never really thought about the issue reconsider their decision, but in the long run, it will save lives since those people who ARE donors after this fact WILL be of help, and situations where a donor's kidney isn't 'held hostage' by donor's family members who thought differently.
