The governments of nearly all 'non-3rd world' countries have set up tourist relief schemes for people who have lost everything or something important.

I'm not going to return to New Zealand till the 19th of January - as scheduled - since I had planned to be based in Bangkok and I'd like to see how the country deals with this situation. However if I had lost someone important to me I imagine I would return home - thankfully that is not the case.

As the story goes: I left my apartment at 8:30am Thai time. Boarded and cast off on a ship ironically named the "Let's Go!" at 9:15am. 45 minutes later at 10:00am the first wave hit. My hotel was simply blocked off by millions of litres of sea water, tons of sand and merchandise. At sea we didn't feel a thing. We stayed out there till about 5:00pm after finding out at 11:00am that the wave had hit.

I couldn't get back to my hotel for a night and when I did I had a hard time getting in and out with my stuff. Thankfully a local lady helped me find a back entrance to the hotel that wasn't blocked off.

The pictures you see on TV can't compare to actually knowing what was there before. Buying a meal from a street vendor 'here', buying a pair of sunglasses 'there' and telling 'that body' three days ago that you didn't want a taxi ride but thanks for the offer.
