    First, I'm re-reading everything that's being written, because I keep forgetting that SOTM is actually referring to the Short Sword of the Mask, as opposed to what SOTM normally stands for - Staff of the Magi.

    Anyway, the biggest problem with Ixil's Spike is not only does it allow a save that will likely be made, but also it only works on approximately human-sized creatures. You can't pin a dragon or demogorgon for example. I have found that for most enemies - especially in melee heavy parties - the best weapons are the ones that cause the most direct damage. It's fine to have one or two people wielding specialty weapons like Staff of the Ram, Ixil's Spike or Axe of the Unyielding, but you also need one or two people going for straight damage, like Gram or Carsomyr.
