Al Quaeda is like McDonalds: doesn't matter who leads it, it will exist and make things.

    Osama deserved what he got.

Osama's death is no great loss to humanity.

Unfortunately, this was the taking down of a symbol of the Al-Qaeda, not of the Al-Qaeda itself. It is a blow to the network's prestige, and possibly to its organization but I doubt it changes all that much except on a psychological level. (Which can be important enough, of course!)

    Silvery,
I understand that, and second and applaud that, but I like to remind you that, even when one holds that noble sentiment, it is still sensible to shoot a rabid dog. It is sensible because it is dangerous and might harm others, and because there is no cure for rabies. That has nothing to do with hate; it is merely necessary.
Yup. This will not end terror but it may speed up the demise of Al Qaeda, which would be a good thing.

I guess I'm not as good a person as MLK, because Osama symbolized terrorism and oppression. I'm with DR -- Osama needed to be eliminated, and the western world should celebrate this blow for justice and western values.

By the same token, we also should stay vigilant, because there are still many people out there who would like nothing better than to return the world to a repressive medieval state without rights for any but a select few.

Relax. Fortunately it is just a self-selected few, and these people are radical enough to alienate other Muslims. It is worth keeping in mind how Iraqi Sunni killed Salafist zealots when they found they were not worth the trouble, or how in Algeria's gruesome civil war the Salafists eventually disgusted everybody with their savage brutality. The fears of an imminent takeover of the Muslim world by Bin Landenite zealots who will re-establish the Caliphate are paranoid delusions.

I think that the Arab Spring may be a more deadly blow to Al Qaeda than the death of Bin Laden (even though that is undeniably useful) - it shows that there are alternatives to the Salafists vision of how to get rid of repressive regimes, and ironically that alternative is a slow shift towards western style citizen participation. Islam will still be a major factor, but there are signs of that development. Very remarkable.

Yes, as can be expected the Obama haters have a few talking points to try to make themselves feel better. Here are just a few:

This one is from the "Christians" at CBN:

Didn't show enough joy? How funny is that?

Youre not getting what Im saying, this is not justice, justice implys punishment, for which there has been none, theyve killed a man who wanted/knew he was going to die, he believed he was going to be rewarded in the afterlife for what he has done.

Depends on the perspective Sho, as Justice in this case is determined by LKDs viewpoint. Most will view his death as a punishment as they don't believe in Osama's beliefs. I know, the arguement is circular, but I think you get my point. One side will view it as Justice, the other as a reward.

Maybe some will, I dont, I really dont see the worlds most powerful millitary finally killing a frail old man as being that impressive.

I really don't think he's dead. Captured & wired for sound being interrogated somewhere yes, dead yet . . no.
By anouncing his death & burial at sea, they allow themselves all the time in the world too wring every last bit of inteligence out of him. Also puts his allies in a false sense of security as they assume all of his secrets died wwith him.

What does the concept of "justice" have to do with the act being somehow "impressive." Seems like a completely separate line of thought.

no, justice has to impress, people have to see an act of justice and think "yes, that is justice, well done, its good to see that this person will be punished.", Im impressed every time I see a decent sentence handed to a criminal, all I see here is stale blooded revenge.

Trust me when I say that many people are "impressed" that the mastermind behind 9/11 has finally been executed for his crimes against humanity. If you're not among those, well, you can't impress them all.

I am not really fond of this idea of executing people with no court no nothing, it does not sit well with me. Not a big fan of Usama but if it is right for us to go kill him it is ok for our enemies to come in and assassinate people they deem to be murderers and "rabid" dogs. Same with Israel assassinating Palestinian leaders and whatnot. Is it war? Is it not war? Nothing is ever straight forward and by just killing Bin Laden (and others) we are not following hte rule of law we tend to claim to defend.
