Alexa's eyes narrowed even further as she considered Ricardo's words. So, Three Swords believed that she was suited to the task of interrogating a prisoner, did he? This would be interesting. Her skills had much improved since the last time she had "interrogated" someone.

She straightened up, wiping her hands on a reasonably clean cloth. "Did the Captain happen to mention just what kind of interrogation he was looking for, or do I get to chose?"

Ricardo smirked. “I believe the captain’s only requirement is pain, Señora…. I am certain you can provide that to a satisfactory degree.”

He watched her clean her hands and start gathering supplies, raising an appreciative eyebrow at some of her choices. He had not expected such… proficiency in the matters of interrogation from her.

“Ready, Señora?” Ricardo asked when she seemed to have finished, offering her his arm with a slight incline of his head.

"Pain, is it? The Captain knows his history well." Her eyes twinkled briefly, then she gingerly hoisted her satchel onto her shoulder, wincing as her side twinged in pain.

Alexa glared briefly at Ricardo, ignoring his profferred arm. "I can manage on my own, thank you."

She looked around the surgery, asessing the condition of the men. They were well enough that both she and Daniel could be absent for a time.

"Daniel, come with me. The wounded are patched up enough for now. I want you to see this." She snapped, barely glancing at him as she made her way onto the main deck.

Three Swords had the Red Hand by the scruff of his neck as he hurled the man through the hole of his cabin door and onto the main deck. The man scrambled to his feet but Abbot's back hand sent him spinning onto his belly. Abbot grabbed the man by his shirt and dragged him across the deck, hauling him up the steps to the bridge out of the way of the eyes and ears of the crew.

Abbot hauled the man violently to his feet, holding him inches from his face, "Listen to me." Three Swords voice was ice cold " Unless you answer my questions, I'm going to have your chest torn open and have each of your organs removed in the most painful way possible - but before that, I'll have you cut, burnt, frozen and beaten until I get an answer. Understand?" The red hand spat on the floor, "Good." Three Swords said as he threw the man to the floor and dragged his cutlass' from their sheaths, ramming them through the muscles above his shoulder, effectively pinning him to the deck. The Red Hand screamed. Three Swords just stared back through his one good eye, expressionless.

Abbot heard footsteps behind him, which he guessed to be the surgeon's "Begin your work, Alexa." Three Swords said.

Alexa nodded, eyes fixed on the Red Hand pinned to the deck. "Yes, sir. Daniel, go stand out of the way, but where you can watch this." Her voice was commanding, brooking no argument.

She knelt on the deck beside the captive. "Ricardo, bring me some seawater and a brazier with hot coals. Hot enough to heat a blade." She withdrew a slender dagger, its keen edge glinting in the sun. Her eyes roved over the captured Red Hand, examining him for injuries.

Noticing some small cuts, a cold smile appeared on her face. "Oh, I see. You have only sustained a few injuries in the fight. That is quite unacceptable." The dagger flashed, and the captive grunted in pain. The few small cuts blossomed into larger slices as the dagger did its work. "Did that hurt? I'm sure it did, but you are too afraid to show it, aren't you?" She crooned, reaching into her bag and pulling out a small phial filled with liquid.

"Captain, hold down his legs." She waited until Abbot had done so, then poured a few drops of the liquid into the freshly bleeding cuts. The Hander gasped in pain, skin turning pale. Alexa's cold smile returned. "This drug just chilled the flesh and blood around the injuries and is now working its way through his body." Her words were casual, as if she were discussing the weather. "It feels as if he has been plunged into a vat of ice water."

She looked up as Ricardo returned, bringing what she had asked for. Nodding briefly, she withdrew another knife, this one rather vicious looking, and plunged the blade into the brazier among the coals.

While she waited for the blade to heat up, Alexa wet a cloth in the bucket of saltwater, and began to wash the injuries. "Now, why don't you answer the good Captain's questions?" Her eyes were flinty as the captive screamed. "Oh, that didn't really hurt, did it? Tsk, I must be losing my touch."

She reached into her bag and pulled out a handful of salt and sprinkled it over the cuts. The resulting scream echoed over the ship's decks.

The Red Hand screamed as loud as the wailing of the greatest banshee - the noise piercing the ear of every crewman on deck. Abbot could see Daniel close his eyes and turn away - something Three Swords might have done himself, if his horror had not been dimmed by his enjoyment.

It was to his shame that he did enjoy it, for torture was not his idea of entertainment. He'd been born with nothing and whatever he had now he had worked hard to get - his life had been comprised of making profit - and he'd kill to get that money but that death would be a clean one, never torture. Right now though, he needed the torture, because he needed answers.

Abbot grabbed Daniel as he turned away and made him face the torture as it was performed. "You'll toughen up, stowaway, or I'll shoot you dead on the spot."

Abbot turned to the Red Hand, "Why have the Red Hand been attacking me?"

The prisoner was sucking in air as Alexa gave him a small respite from the torture. "No answer?" Three Swords said, "Very well. Alexa - continue."

The cold, efficient way Alexa brought forth pain and screams from the captive made Ricardo smile. His eyes shone darkly as he watched her work, relishing in the pain and suffering she caused. Those slim hands wrought the most delightful sounds of agony from the captive; Ricardo was almost glad that the fool was not answering.

Rationally, he knew that extracting information was why this was happening; the Captain wanted to find out why the Red Hands were being so persistent. But rationality was something he was losing very, very quickly; the fire in his blood that had not died after the battle was starting to flare again… coals as hot as those in the brazier burned in the pit of his stomach as he watched his redhead continue her work.

Magnificent”, he murmured under his breath.

Somewhere, in the back of his mind, an image of fire-hair and bloody pain flashed briefly… briefly enough for the bloodlust coursing through him to drown effortlessly.

Alexa nodded at Three Swords' words, and pulled the dagger out of the coals. The blade was glowing slightly from the heat. The fingers of her other hand hovered over the blade, like a caress.

Suddenly, she tore open the remains of the captive's shirt and pressed the flat of the still glowing blade onto his chest. The scream of pain was torn out of him as the smell of burnt flesh filled the air.

Alexa started crooning again. "Ah, yes, that hurts, doesn't it? This isn't something that I enjoy doing, you must know this." She put the blade back into the coals, and pulled out a mallet.

"Gentlemen, I shall need him held down, and his hands held out, fingers extended." She waited while Three Swords and Ricardo did as she asked.

The hand extended, Alexa swung the mallet down on his knuckles, breaking the first row of knuckles. Eyes cold, she watched as he convulsed in pain, flailing against the men holding him down. Just as his convulsions stopped, she brought the mallet down again, this time breaking the next row.

The screams increased in volume, and she smiled coldly. "Now, are you willing to talk? Are you willing to answer the captain's questions? Or do I have to keep doing this?"

There was no answer. "Ricardo, bring me a flask of the strongest rum you can find."

Alexa sighed and pulled out yet another dagger. "I think it is time to open up some more cuts. Perhaps that will sharpen your memory." The blade glinted as she drew the dagger along his thigh. Blood started to flow from the wound, and Alexa pulled out another handful of salt, and sprinkled it liberally over the new cut.

The scream rang out across the deck.

She leaned down and whispered in his ear. "Ah yes, the pain of having salt poured into a wound. We both know how agonizing that is." She picked up the discarded cloth and began to wash the leg with salt water.

"I can make the pain stop, if you would just answer the good Captain's questions."

Ricardo did not welcome Alexa’s request of bringing her a bottle of rum; however, as he walked away, he realized it was the best thing that could have happened. Being so close to her as he’d held the man down had strained his control to the extreme.

It had been so close that he had not grasped her wrist and kissed her blood-splattered palm, dragged her close and let her know just how much she intoxicated him. But Ricardo was not a foolish man; no matter how much his blood burned for her, he knew he could do nothing. Not yet.

It was easy enough to locate a bottle of rum strong enough for the redhead’s purposes. Ricardo could not have been sure, but he suspected he knew what she planned to do… and could only applaud her ingenuity.

His hold of his self-control was slightly firmer when he returned to the bridge; he could see her wiping a wet cloth over a long, thin cut on the Red Hand’s thigh; she was murmuring something too quiet for him to hear.

Hiding a wince, he crouched next to her, holding out the flash. “Your rum, Señora, he told her with a slight smile. “May I be of further assistance?”

The Red hand's body was convulsing with the pain as he tried to break free of Three Swords hold. "I'll talk!" he screamed, "I'll talk!" he cried again as the dagger began to lower to his skin again.

"Tell me then!" Three Swords shouted at the Red Hand "Why are you attacking my ship?"

    "We were ordered to."

"That doesn't help me, Red Hand. Who ordered it?"

"The captain!" He paused "I don't know nothing else - I'm just a crewman."

"You're a bosun and you know more than you let on. Why were you sent to kill me?" Three Swords asked again.

"It wasn't just you." The Red Hand said, willing to talk now that a hot blade hung over his eye, "It was the entire ship. A bounty was put on the Pale Horse and her entire crew." This surprised Three Swords. Why the whole ship?

    "Why?" Three Swords asked

"That's all I know. Honest to Davy Jones, it is!" Three Swords shook his head.

"You know more. Alexa - carry on."

There was no where on the ship to escape the screams, the vessel was simply too small. Matty tried, though. First he ran to his cubby and tried to play his loudest pipes, ignoring the throbbing headache that pounded with every breath. But the scream pierced even those strident tones, and the ir uneven rhythm had him hesitating in anticipation of their next outburst. Maybe someday he'd be able to incorporate that pain into real music, but right now it was too raw, too real.

He gave up on music and headed towards the galley. Old Meatloaf could be counted on to scrounge up something for him to do, hopefully something that required a lot of banging of pots and pans. He didn't know that silent tears were streaming down his cheeks as he entered the galley.

Alexa nodded slightly to Ricardo. "Indeed you may. If you would, please step on his other hand. Hard enough to break the bones." She moved aside slightly and indicated the hand that was to be broken.

As he stomped down on the hand, the crunch of the delicate bones was clearly heard. Alexa flinched slightly, remembering a time years ago when one of her friends had something similar happen. Shaking her head to dispel the memory, she smiled in thanks and moved back to the side of the Red Hand. "Yes, it hurts, doesn't it? If you just answered the Captain honestly the first time, you wouldn't be experienceing such pain."

Picking up the bottle of rum, she uncorked it and took a quick sip of it. "Ah, this shall do quite nicely." Starting to croon again, she poured some of the rum over the hand Ricardo had just stomped on. She handed up the bottle of rum to the Captain. Changing her tune to a lilting shanty, she picked up a dry rag and placed the end of it in the brazier and watched flames start to lick up the fabric.

Carefully lifting the cloth out, she placed the burning end on top of the hand and backed up slightly as the rum and flesh caught on fire. The smell of burnt flesh rose again from the captive. Soon, she picked up the bucket of sea water and poured it over the hand, putting out the flames. "Isn't it curious how powerful fire is? How much pain it can cause, and yet how it can purify so many things?"

She rose slowly, wincing as her side twinged. "Answer the Captain's questions!"

Daniel forced himself to watch his mom torturing the man. It did help that he remembered watching the man plunge a cutlass into one of his crew mate's back during the battle, and that they were out to kill everyone on the Pale Horse, but just a little. None of the stories mom and Arvin told that made pirating seem like such a fun job were anything like this. But he did not want the captain to shoot him, so he watched.

Half of his stomach came up into his mouth, and he just managed to keep it all in, with a large amount going up into his nasal cavity. He swallowed it back down, but the stomach acid burned his sinuses.

Good God! Why didn't the man just talk, or die? Then this all could be over.

Alistair was lying on the main deck, enjoying the brisk fresh sea air while looking in his notebook. There was something vaguely strange about...something. He couldn't recall, but it had to do with...something.

    Something.

He nodded, satisfied, and wrote that down in his notebook. Then he flipped back a few pages and pondered over a name. Colin Baird. Some navy person. Fat. Bearded. Untrustworthy. Should probably be shot.

Then a scream came, and Alistair looked up, wondering what it was. More followed, and, realizing that it's probably the Spanish bastard torturing some poor captive, he shrugged and lit a cigar. That was another reason why he enjoyed being up here - nobody to tell him to stop smoking. As for the screaming, they didn't bother him much. He was used to it a long, long time ago. It was typical of those pirate scum.

    Pirates...

He stared into space for a while, musing. A few seconds later he decided it was too cold for him and descended downstairs, when he noticed Matty walking shakily in front of him. His eyes narrowed. The something vaguely strange seemed to be about him.

Curious, Alistair followed Matty and watched him enter the galley. Remembering what happened the last time he went in, he opened it and ducked before entering.

Jacques stood in the corner of the galley, slowly eating an apple and watching Meatloaf violently hack a piece of ham into jagged slivers. He seemed to be enjoying himself, but to Jacques it wasn't an image that went well with the sounds of Alexa and the Red Hand coming from the deck. He swallowed a mouthful of apple with difficulty.

He looked up from the maelstrom of blades and meat at the new arrivals - the musician, looking pale and shaky, and the bounty hunter, looking just as wary, but more worried than Matty to be walking into the galley. Jacques threw each of them an apple as they walked in.

Alistair saw the red projectile flying his way and caught it, determining it to be considerably smaller than the pie.

He looked around in the galley. There was another pie, and Meatloaf was chopping some meat up. In the corner sat a man, someone Alistair thought he recognized. Then it came to him, it was the fellow who was wielding knives in the midst of battle. Alistair had thought he was rather interesting, and gave him a nod before sitting down near him.

"Good day," he said. "I think I've seen you around Freetown. Jack, isn't it?"

Disturbing Meatloaf when his knives were flying was never a good idea, so Matty accepted the apple gratefully and sat down a few seats away from Jacques and Alistair. Too bad the Frenchman had to be here, but Matty wasn't sure what he wanted to avoid more at the moment, the unwanted attention or the Hander's screaming. Between chopping and crunching and talking, the galley was almost noisy enough to drown out the hideous sounds from above. Almost.

Finishing the fruit, Matty pulled out his tin whistle and began to play softly. This was one of the first instruments Da had taught him - along with teaching him the invaluable skill of listening to others' conversations when he seemed to be absorbed in his music.

"Close - Jacques. And good day to you both." Jacques waited for them both to settle.

"I can't say as I've seen you around the ship much, bounty hunter. I suppose I tend to keep in the background more than most myself... It's the wisest thing to do, sometimes." Jacques turned to look at Matty. Suddenly noticing the streams of tears running down those too-smooth cheeks, he let his eyes linger for a moment, wondering exactly how he could confront him about the secret that was becoming harder and harder to conceal. He seemed to be lost in playing his whistle, but a barely perceptible frown showed that he did not like the attention. Jacques shifted his gaze back to Alistair.

"Hunting anyone in particular at the moment, or are you just along for the ride?" Jacques grinned.

Duece had recieved help and had all the shards pulled from his arm. Now it hung in a simple sling. It would be a few days before he could fully use it. He was thankful for the pistol. He sait quietly on deck. He could hear the screams of the Red Hand, but he felt no pity. Only a few hours ago the pirate would've run Duece through given the chance.

Standing gingerly, Duece turned to go below deck and find his hammock. He was tired and he didn't want to hear the screams of dieing man for the rest of the day.

"Oh, I'm hunting someone. Goes by the name of Jonathan, Jonathan Firen. Not very famous, as such, but quite notorious in navy circles." Alistair exhaled a puff of smoke rings and watched them nonchalantly. "He was an ex-navy, and he would do such dirty tricks as go into port with his old navy flags, and then striking when they least expected it.

Noticing that Jacques seemed to be looking at Matty, Alistair too took a glance at him, smiled a bit, and took another bite on the apple.
