    — I really love AD&D 2nd ed. as much (at least ! ;) ) than Felinoid, and I can only say this :

    • He is RIGHT, fully right !

    — Also, I remind to all readers that, in the setting of this REAL Sword Coast, AD&D 2nd ed. rules FULLY PREVAIL, with all the possible additions of BG1 game, (but almost never deep modifications).

    • For example, Light, Continual Light, Darkness, and cantrips (zero level spells) all exist in REAL Sword Coast. But also, exist the classes named "Specialist Magic-users" of BG1, because it is only an ADDITION, which dont disturb the basic laws of THAT world ...
    ... THE real world where the Strange Mage was plane-shifting YOU ! ... :outta: :)

    I still wouldn't want to go there because I still reckon my life expectancy would be about 10 seconds as I would almost certainly be squashed by the first random kobold I encountered, despite my dazzling array of level one skills (unless one of those skills was the ability to run away really fast).

    To Harbourboy :

    ... even with the special "Power Word, Reload" that I allowed to you in Page 1 of this topic ? ...

    — As described, it was risky business, but ...

    ;)

    I voted ethical no on both questions, but more because I wouldn't want to leave my family, friends and boyfriend behind than because I want to spare the FRers the suffering. ;)

    • If you have time to read all the replies above (and my answers ...), you will know that for the persons who dont want to leave family, a added gift is consented to them :
    — turn back on the earth seven years later as the others, BUT ONLY ONE MINUTE has elapsed in Terra, your prime world !
    :good:
    ... AND, about your boy-friend, he can freely choose, HE, ALSO : to LEAVE as a new adventurer near YOU (if you want leave, at second thought ...), or staying on Terra (ask him !) :thumb: :)

    Hmmm...I'm still mostly negative, I think. ;) Even with the only one minute thing and the power word reload thing. ;) 7 years is simply too long...Even if I don't get killed, I might get maimed or tortured...might end up living in poverty and all...and I'd miss the family members that were left behind. And my 21st century comfort. :shake:

    [IMG] Yes, Uytuum, all the things which you were enumerating were possible to occur ! ...
    You are right. :o

    But think :
    :hmm: In XXI th century you can ALSO be "maimed" (as you say), very simply, throwed down by a car all plainly — or, by a accident beetween 2 cars, you beeing into one of the two ! And probability of this is NOT negligible (of course I dont tell about YOU personally !). ;)

    ... On the other hand, clearly, since you live in Belgium, the potentialities of beeing tortured are much more real in Sword Coast than on Terra (kobolds, xvarts, and hobgobelins have a very sinister fame in those matters).
    But, after all, you usually have a party of experienced partners to rescue you very quickly, if the things begin going so bad !

    Adventuring alone is foolish in REAL Sword Coast, and is usually never done : therefore, as most nasty petty monsters are cowards, only lonely commoners are captured and tortured for "pleasure".
    Captured unlucky adventurers are fastly killed (in fear of retaliation) ; and nobles are captured only in the hope to obtain a ransom !

    [ I have ascertained with unease that numerous who voted here have a one-way view of Swords Coast : these ones who think that BG1 real world is "Sunday at the Beach" dont see the many dangers of the Sword Coast ; those who think that BG1 world is an hellish place dont see any of the beauties and advantages of the Sword Coast ]. :cool:

    Depends. If I had no family to leave behind, I might be tempted - but depending on many, many factors, I would still end up refusing. First, God is one and His name is not Lathander or Helm or Ilmater or even Ao. I would have a huge religious problem. Next, magic. Another religious problem - not with their use of it but rather with mine, if I were to try and learn it like they have it. Ultimately, with no local currency and no artisan skills, with just the academic skills I have, what could I become? Come on, apart from my deficient fencing, I wouldn't even have a weapon. And my glasses could break without replacement. :D

    Actually, Chevalier, I think that there are glasses in Forgotten Realms, seeing that Quayle has a pair.

    By his rate of critical failures when he was in my party, I don't think those glasses are working at all... :p

    [IMG] To Chevalier :
    You will NOT have ANY religious problem, Chevalier. :cool: :cool: :cool:

    Think : In the J.R.R. TOLKIEN saga, (which begins with the Silmarillion as you know), The One God, The Only, is named "ERU" (or "ILÙVATAR" by elves).
    Now, well :
    ILÙVATAR isn't, in no way, competed by, or even hampered by the numerous Valars of godly status, and Manwë (the equivalent of Jove) included ! :bigeyes:

    On Earth/Terra, it's the same thing.
    GOD is not competed or hampered by anyone or anything.
    Monotheism dont destroy polytheism, it EATS it ! :)
    ANGELS and ARCHANGELS are the powers who DESCRIBES the VARIOUS ASPECTS of The Only GOD, The One. Then :

    MICHAEL is the Sun, Apollo, GOD in his "synthetic", "spirit" aspect ;
    GABRIEL is the Moon, Artemis, GOD in his "fantasy", "soul" aspect ;
    RAPHAEL is Mercury, Hermes, GOD in his "intelligence", "knowledge" aspect ;
    ANAEL is Venus, Aphrodite, GOD in his "love", "paradisiac" aspect ;
    SAMAEL is Mars, Ares, GOD in his "dynamic", "will" aspect ;
    SACHIEL is Jupiter, Zeus, GOD in his "order", "wisdom" aspect.
    CASSIEL is Saturn, Cronos, GOD in his "builder" and "eternity" aspects.
    [ Yes, they are other aspects, but this base is sufficient for the samples ]. :angel:

    In the Real Sword Coast with BG1 rules, the situation is exactly the same as above : the so many numerous gods are the ASPECTS of GOD, THE SPIRIT, THE ONE.
    — To use easily all aspects of THE SPIRIT : protection, love, ... and so on, each person go to a different temple to pray one god or an other ; these are only as make requests to an angel or a saint : these are not blasphemies here, in fact it is all the contrary : a mode of honour of the Sacred, all the Sacred.

    In all cases, to remove your scruples, (and since, in this topic, I am the Dungeon Master of the Real Sword Coast ! ...) :) , I DECREE the things thereafter :
    — Yes, there is several Places of Worship of The ONE, The Only GOD, in Sword Coast and Baldur's Gate City.
    — There are NO classical clerics of Him, however.
    And NO dogma.
    And NO particular alignments for the worshipers : if you want pray, no GOD Himself, but an aspect of Totality, it's easy : go in the temple of any other god, and operate as usual ... :lol:

    Ooh, I can see a religious debate forming up...

    And actually, there are evidently many gods in Forgotten Realms, who can in no way be an aspect of just one.

    And on the other note, it's going to be veery, veery weird if we can ourselves decide what Sword Coast will be like...

    [IMG] @ Goli Ironhead

    NO religious debate at all. The reply was, mainly, ONLY for Chevalier, Mister Goli ! :p Blood isn't going to flood our cool topic, ... Mmm ? ... You dont want that, for sure !
    ;)

    • To everyone :

    — And YES, you can wish that you will decide to change several things in the REAL Sword Coast, BUT ONLY IF, in the poll, you have chosen to travel in the BG1 world !
    ... And any changes, you will do them, not as demiurgic fools,... but as fair little First Level Characters, of the class of your choice ; (and/or, as colonists, if crawling into gloomy dungeons dont seduce you on the spot).

    Be creative, imagine WHAT you were firstly doing, if you would REALLY arrive at Beregost ...
    I am really curious of that ... :)

    Okay something must've gone wrong with my reply;

    Short version: Bloody hell, no

    Long version: Bloody hell, no I'll be in a medieaval world (ucck no hygiene, povrety, total monarchy) filled with monstreous crap, zealous flamming soldier or whatever they are, elves, dwarves etc. and with that obviously strong racial hatred and / or discrimination. I wouldn't know any language native to this land, I'll be « the new guy ». My things in life are Cinema (I'm in college in Cinema also) and Music, so yeah good chance finding a DVD player or a Daft Punk record in FR.

    Am I more precise now? :p

    Yes, Ofelix, you are precise now ... :)

    But you are wrong in many things, read my reply here after and judge by yourself :

    Firstly, I must INSIST —once more time !—, that the REAL Sword Coast is NOT fully medieval-type, (neither is the BG1 system, by the way). In fact, Sword Coast is far enough of medieval way of life ; think :

    1) You said : "no hygiene". It's WRONG. Look : near-ALL houses of Beregost, Nashkel, BG Herself, (and so on ...) have a BATH-ROOM, with obvious BOTH LAVATORIES, and BATH-TUBS. :p :thumb:

    2) You said : "povrety". NO, except some beggars, the commoners are rather "well-to-do" in money concerns, (or WERE "well-to-do" before the economic crisis occasioned by Nashkel Mines problem, in all cases !).
    Generally, there are LESS unemployed workmen in Sword Coast than in Terra !
    :bigeyes:
    — And you forget that YOU, as First Level Character, are possibly targets to grow VERY RICH if you become an successful adventurer ! :cool:
    (I remind you that you start in Beregost wih 800 Gold Pieces given by the "Strange Mage", enough money to buy a good equipement ...) :heh:

    3) You said : "total monarchy". Humm, more probably CAUTIOUS monarchy. Assassins are common enough use for unhappy folks. And, anyway, humans are in LITTLE numbers in a hostile world full of monsters ; (mutual help is common in REAL Sword Coast, on the same rate as in Earth today, but for other reasons, obvious ones ...).

    4) For racial hatred/preferences, read the Players Handbook and tables on the topic. Not worst in BG1 than on Earth, I bet ... :bad: :)

    5) Yes, if you travel to Sword Coast, you can AUTOMATICALLY speak "common", (thank to the mage who shifted you in Beregost).
    "Common" is a language understood of allbody, and even a lot of monsters speak several words of "common". (AD&D rules 2nd edition are always used, as noted above).

    6) For movies you are right, there are no movies in Sword Coast. But, shame on you, :shame: what a pity to think to watch movies, when YOU are in The Main Movie ? ... And among the main actors, if you do well ... :lol: :happy: :bigeyes:

    It would be a yes from me. I'd be a mage, get myself an apprenticeship to a more powerful mage, and conduct research into the ways magic could be put to use to aid in peoples everyday use. I'd get myself a mage tower in a small town (like Thalantyr's), and have an institution of learning, where people would send their children to learn the ways of magic, for the betterment of society. Then, when my seven years are up, I ask for more.

    [IMG] To Arabwel :

    :lol: —Yes, for sure, dear Arabwel, you can bring any cats you want !
    [ ... and you CAN also bring your imagined twin sister, Mirabel, extracting herself of the astral sphere where she is so weary ! :p ]

    I LOVE cats (in fact, the cat is one of my two prefered animals, the other beeing cobaya).
    • And if I love cats, my little finger say to me that the Strange Mage who will shift YOU in Beregost love them, too ... :bigeyes:

    To Alavin :

    Alavin, you can learn and then teach, but you cannot be a FULLY sedentary mage ! :) Magic ways cost often a lot, and perhaps it's time to think not only to the marvellous future civilization you will be helping to create, but also to the boring days where you will be cornered to kill some monsters ! ... :lol:
    As it is. For the fun. As a dilettante. Making caution to not beeing killed yourself. (An accident is so swift to come ...) ;)
