As I said, it went out the window "quite a while ago". And as the bad genes mix further and further into the pool, you'll see more and more people with glasses until it eventually plateaus.
Because they do keep getting progressively worse from continued use. :p It's just not noticable except over a long period.

In my experience stress levels are a more important factor than level of computer usage.

From my final year of high school onwards I used to wear glasses for distance vision but since I graduated from University my vision has actually improved so that I don't need them anymore.

My optometrist was baffled and couldn't figure out why my eyes would have improved after going from the 'low stress" of school to the "high stress" of the working world. I just about died laughing - he obviously has no idea of how hard I studied in school.

Quite frankly the work force has been a cake walk compared to how hard I used to work in order to be one of the top students at school. I think the highest number of hours that I have ever worked on the job has been 70 in a week (normally I work around 40) where as I typically spent between 80-90 hours a week in class, studying and doing assignments while in University.

Also the grading of just about everything in school compared to relatively little concrete on the job performance evaluation makes work much less stressful.

Heh, school was more stressful than my current job, and I'm in perhaps one of the most stressful work environments on the planet.

I wear glasses, mostly because I look a lot better with glasses than I do with contacts.

I still don't get that. Everyone's eyes seem to crap out all of a sudden when they are teenagers, bad enough to need some sort of corrective lenses, but then the prescription for those lenses doesn't seem to change that much (for the admittedly small and unscientific sample of people that I know). My prescription has not changed in the last 10 years even though I use a computer all day every day.

Lasik - how does that fit into your poll? Used to have to wear glasses/contact lenses during all waking hours, now, I only wear shades.

Since I was twelve. Only have one eye that Lasik would work for, and the other eye is the bad one, so no surgery for me.

I think that there is not a significant change in peoples vision from 20 years ago to now, I think now, however, there is a lot more attention put towards the importance of having correct vision. People are a lot more health conscious these days and that includes occular health as well.

BTW it looks like I am one of the minority. No glasses or contacts. 20/20.

I got bifocals at 17. I'm supposed to wear them all the time, but Usually I only wear them in public or for reading. They bug me when I have them on too long. That and I don't have $250 to shell out for new ones if they get broke...

Supposed to be wearing all the time...because my eyeballs are wrongly shaped from my birth, which I don't want to believe but I guess I should accept the scientific result...Anyways...since I can see pretty well without my glasses I only wear my glasses when reading and watching electronic devices (TV, computer monitor, and even movie screen).

Worn glasses for about 4 years now. Only used them to be able to read words on a projector in uni lectures at first, then my eyesight got a bit worse and I wear them full time now. My left eye has had a a condition since birth. Can't recall the scientific term, but basically the point at which the light entering the eye gets focused moves around or 'wobbles', so that the image is blurry. My right eye used to compensate entirely, but that's got short sighted now. Too many video games ^_^

I'm new by the way, so um, hello!

    Welcome onboard, matey.

I have the same condition as you, but in my right eye. A positive side effect is that bright light and glare don't bother me half as much if I only use that eye.

I need glasses for driving, but my close up vision is good enough for now...

I've got a positive eyesight score thingy...so I have to wear them whenever I'm on the computer, writing, reading etc...

PS: Wow...there's a LOT of folks with eyesight problems here...there's very few people who answered No... :D

Bad vision does have some cause with tv, computer and portable gaming. But it's really genetics. Yes, really.

The socket of your skull where your eyeball fits is molded in a different way for each person. The bone is what comforms the eyeball to it's shape, hence affecting your vision. Until that bone is fixed to cradle the eye so you don't need optical aides, your vision will be bad. This why Lasik (and its peons) doesn't stick with a lot of the people that pay for it.

Permanently for me too. Since the age of 2, my mum tells me .
And ours is genetic long-sight, my father and paternal grandmother both had the same condition. Also, I have a 'lazy eye' on the right side
