The boy actually points in different directions according to the PC's class (stronghold quest).
A fighter will be told to go to the CC and help Nalia, etc.

The Shadow Thieves/Bodhi alternative is the most interesting dilemma in the game, either you side with an evil underworld organization which rules all criminal activities in Amn (there are no victimless crimes: burglary, kidnapping, theft, drugs, prostitution, etc) or with the other guild which is ruled by... vampires. Either way you can't trust any of these guilds. The Shadow Thieves are the lesser evil (IMO the more mundane evil).

The stronghold quest is not essential and at firts helping out the Shadow Thieves and Renal Bloodscalp seems like a harmless undercover operation. What Maevar requires is to steal an item from a temple -depending on the PC's alignement, Talos for good characters.
A paladin wouldn't be able to steal this item. Would he/she ask the highpriestess for it? This would probably result in an open fight (killing instead of stealing?).
Another more rogue like good character would have no qualms about stealing but things could get more complicated afterwards.

Edwin (very much in character since in BG1 he was already looking for assassins) gives the PC his/her next assignment as if he/she was a contract killer...

If we consider a good thief -a Robin Hood type- as the PC then the only loophole is going to be the 'self defence argument' which nevertheless remains debatable (if you don't loiter about you can still get out of RG's home before he starts his spell casting).

I don't think Edwin is any better than Tolgerias. Tolgerias asks the PC to comply without knowing the task at hand (which by the way IMO enables the PC to break his word afterwards even if a LG type would preferably confront Tolgerias and openly declare that he/she sides with Valygar). Now if you remember, in BG1 Edwin did ask the PC for help to kill the witch Dynaheir but he wouldn't say why he wished her death.
There is a lot in common between the Red Wizard of Thay and the Cowled Wizard in the Government District.
Nevertheless two wrongs don't make a right.
Agreeing to do Edwin's task is not a good deed since it is tantamount to protecting his interests in the underworld. If the PC doesn't have in mind killing Rayic Gerthras, he/she at least has planned to bully him in order to allow Edwin to pursue with his activities, the PC can't possibly convince him that Edwin is not up to something.
Why is Edwin in Athkatla if not for the Nether Scroll? Is it possible that this could be the very reason why he is being watched by a cowled wizard in the first place? These are merely suppositions but doesn't seem so farfetched considering what we know:
