Rutkowski - I was actually ageeing with you, as I noted in the opening of my post.

Kuemper - As for Washington being "an American," perhaps for your own reasons you don't consider him one, nevertheless he did consider himself one. You need to take a look at a few of the founding documents, (such as the Constitution of the United States, since his signature is fixed to it), which may persuade you differently.

You may have answered your own question here.

George Washington was born in North American therefore he was an American. As to being a citizen of the USA both Kuemper and Chandos have answered that.

@Chandos - didn't mean to get myself into shoot here as well. I thought both men were English, hence the question. Sorry for being a newbie.

<slowly backs out of this forum post, vowing *never* to return no matter what looks intriguing>

Well, that's certainly true that both men were of English descent. But almost all of us, execpt for those who are of American Indian descent, are transplants. I am also only second generation here myself, as both my grandparents are from Germany. Nevertheless, I still consider myself an American, because I was born here in the US. Regarding a "shoot here," I did not consider it a shoot at all. But feel free to draw your own conclusions, since I can only speak from my own intentions, and you can speak better from your own intentions than I can.

    What's the fun of that?

Actually, in the play 1776, Ben Franklin is quoted as saying (I don't know if he actually said it though) "I wouldn't mind being Called an Englishman if it came with all the rights that were afforded an Englishman. Likewise, an ox wouldn't mind being called a bull but I'm sure he'd much rather have what's rightfully his..."
