Hunting eels with spears I have done. That is fine, because we usually eat the meat from it. But I wouldn't go hunting things with a gun or what ever. I just wouldn't find it fun at all. If you're going to have a big advantage like a gun why not go all the way and napalm the animals, that way you get them cooked as well :p .

Hunting is fine, IMO as long as the hunter does not have a to great advantage, like a gun or a plane packed with napalm. Using a bow and arrows (something which I have to try soon) or a spear or fishing rod is fine if you make use of the whole animal.

One of the problems with hunting, both for sport and for sustinence, is most hunters take the wrong animals. If the predators still remained, they would take the sick, old and even young animals. Hunters, for sport, go after the big healthy animal. People who hunt for food and such, still most of the time, take the big healthy animal. So what does this leave? The weak and the sick. Then the population still suffers, there's more disease for one. Then Fish and Game (in the US) or some other agency has to go in and remove the whole population because it is sick. In order for hunting to be truly effective for a means of population control, leave the big healthy animals so they can reproduce. Take a weaker animal. The nutritional content of the meat is still the same.
Also, people who fish but "catch and release" annoy me. When you touch a fish, you remove the slime coating that the fish has on it for protection. When you throw a fish back without the coating, it is more likely to contract a disease and could pass it on to more of the population.
I have no problem with hunting or fishing. But only when it is done properly and not for sport. I fish quite often. Have not hunted yet.
