I've long accepted that I don't suffer from insomnia ... I'm just living in the wrong time-zone.

Great line Nior! I hope you won't mind if I use it. I slept only three hours last night, it makes work so much harder.

[IMG] I've always had sleep troubles since I was little, luckily I seem fairly adjusted to not having much sleep ;)

I'll usually just stay up until I can't anymore or try to sleep, every so often I just enter a "dream state" instead though when I can't sleep at all.

"last night for some reason it didnt switch my brain off. It switched everything else off tho, which is kinda weird, yet comfy at the same time, to have your body asleep but your mind awake."

That's what they call meditation! Congratulations, you have taken the first steps on the path to a career as a yoga master. Or something :D

I've had disturbed sleep patterns since I was a young child, a typical night I'll fall asleep, reach REM sleep about 90 minutes, during or after REM period I will wake up for about 30 minutes.

Rinse and repeat as often as possible til about 7am when body goes awake now. Sleeping pills don't help they just leave me feeling muggy in the morning; so I do meaningless stuff til I fall asleep again.

    Horrible sleeper here.

Not only do I take forever to fall asleep (when I DO fall asleep), my sleeping time is choppy and of spotty quality at best. Asleep body and awoke mind? The story of my life.

8am and I haven't been to sleep yet. Despite lying motionless from 1-4, desperately trying to think about nothing.

You couldn't tell by the timestamp on my previous post that I haven't slept? I've been freakishly busy lately though, so I'm going for the caffeine OD option till I've taken care of the stuff I need to. Of course, at this point the sleep loss would choose to bite me in the arse and leave me a human zombie.

    Brainssss... :coffee:

I try to avoid taking melatonin unless absolutely necessary because, whilst I'm fine after I actually wake, it makes it hard as hell for me to rouse myself from my stupor unless I've had 8-12 hours' worth of shut-eye (the largest portion of my alarm-clock slamming has been on melatonin) - and it's not even a sleeping pill... So if I need to wake up early and thus am looking at a projected 5-6 hours of sleep, I can't risk sleeping through the alarm.

I had to get up at 7 today. Which you people will find normal, but for me, is a major change in sleeping patterns seeing as most of the time I sleep till 9-10. I always wake up a couple of times as well, resulting in perhaps 5.5 or 6 hours of interrupted sleep last night and a zombie-ish moi today. The thing is, when you work and are active it's not so bad, but when you have to study or think about complex things it's horrible.

I'm just an evening person, I'm even prettier at night...seriously, I'm pale till about 6 and then start showing some colour, my skin seems tighter, I'm warmer in the evening/night, more lucid and way more active...I need something to get my blood running in the morning, it seems. And a good eye cream. :p

    Vampire! ;)

No, I'm an evening person. I don't find getting up at 7 "normal" at all unless I never went to bed in the first place. The rest of the time, that kind of wake-up hour is the devil's work dammit, even if it's lectures I'm waking up for....

Quite recently I've stayed awake until around 4 am, because I've been hanging on the words of a girl who's got a funny day rhythm. Luckily she's been going to sleep earlier for the few couple of days.

Otherwise I might have trouble sleeping if my neighbors are partying. Then I might put my whole music library playing on random. This has usually worked better than putting earplugs or using earphones or both. Also the steady humming of the computer might help there as well. Any steady humming just works like an anesthetic. One of the reasons I'm not too keen to get a driver's licence. I usually just pass out every single time I'm traveling by car, coach or train.

Hey, 7 is the hour I go to bed -- it's 2PM here and I'm barely awake.

That makes it two, then. :heh:

Anyone sometimes got that feeling that you can't/shouldn't go to sleep, eventhough you feel like sleeping?

Feels like you should do something,
(when you actually don't need to do anything, it just feels like it)
but you don't know what, so you just end up staying awake, trying to figure out what you had to do and yet never doing actually anything conductive.

Maybe you watch tv or a movie or something, as long as it kills the time until you feel that you've got to go to sleep.

I've got that feeling sometimes and it's annoying as it....

YAY, I think I'll be able to get some sleep now, if I'm asleep in 30 mins I might get 3 hours of sleep, and tomorrow I've got to help my friend to move, luckily I only do 6 hour days at work, might get some shut-eye in between.

I used to be more prone to insomnia before I started being worked into the ground, now I have more trouble staying awake. Getting up at 5:50 every morning will do that to you, k'know?

I hate Sundays nights (or Mondays, on a three-day weekend). I just can't fall asleep then, and considering that I'm already starting by going to bed at a ridiculous hour, I'm generally wiped out for the rest of the day.

Well, I almost always sleep soundly, tend to get by on about five hours a night (with a 'recharge' of maybe nine to ten one night once every several weeks or so), but I take at least an HOUR to get to sleep; I'll be tired and desirous of slumber, but it's like I'm sitting watching the kettle waiting for it to boil. :bad:

I can count on maybe two hands the number of genuine instances of insomnia I've had, and almost none of those are the usual 'kept up by stresses in life' or anything. Usually it's "okay, I'm not tired now...there's six-hundred-forty holes in one panel of the acoustic ceiling tile above me...maybe I'll get up and go see what the Europeans have to say on BoM..." *shrug*

I've never taken sleeping pills, though I have taken cold medication or similar that had a sleep-inducing effect...I remember one time I had a horrible flu so bad I took two naproxen sodium 'fever-reducer' tablets in mid-afternoon. I awoke feeling fantastic (I mean better than I had in MONTHS) and chipper and energetic at about two a.m. with no internet cxn nor anything to actually do. :aww:

Ran out of steam about noon the next day and slept again long enough to 'reset my body clock'. :heh:

I very often suffer from Insomnia. Booze indeed does the trick for me, but not a very feasible plan if you gotta get up at work the next day :p .

So I usually just drink lot's of coffee and crawl my way through the day..

A good spliff or two usually does the trick, though - I'll be sleepin like a baby ;) .

I tend to fall into insomniatic patterns frequently, and Im not sure why. Often it feels like Ive yet to complete something that I should have completed, like maybe I need some sort of closure. At the moment Im sleeping as much as I can in the day and not very often at night, and as a result I dont make it to my classes (havent been to any class for at least 2 months due to insomnia). I find smoking a few cones helps, or a spliff or two, but Im broke so I cant get much each week. My doctor gave me sleeping pills once to help me get to sleep, and they worked for about 3 nights and then didnt work after that.

Ive tried everything I can imagine to get to sleep, from walking to smoking to writing long confessional emails to my special lady friend clearing up things that Ive been not so honest about and also playing many many games and reading too, but nothing works. Reasons for me not sleeping vary too, sometimes everytime Im about to nod off finally I need to go to the loo, and its hard to sleep when youre needing to empty your bladder every half an hour for about 3 hours, especially when its 4am and I need to be up at 7am and I havent slept a wink. No idea why, but it happens. Also my knees get sore when I get too tired, and I need to crack them to relieve the tension, but to do that I need to wake up and roll onto my back and stretch my legs out...every 10-15 minutes, so I dont get much sleep on those nights. I think its something to do with my arthritis. Mostly though its as if I just cant turn my brain off and my brain is rushing about at the speed of light, but my body is exhausted.

Hopefully I get some sleep tonight, my dads coming home from holiday tomorrow and the house is messy, so I need to pretend like I was doing the dishes every day (and I so wasnt).

Ever considered it might be a depression? Can't hurt to have a chat with your doctor.

I had a very simillar case a few years back and it turned out I had a depression, it totally destroyed my education, and I had to drop out after having missed about 2 months of latin classes up to my examination...

I have been diagnosed with depression, but Im not on any, uh...prescribed medication, just cannabis, and its working better than prozac ever did. I dont feel depressed anymore, I feel happy and I have a very positive outlook on life now, nothing worries me, even though I miss classes and didnt hand in one essay for one of my classes, Im still keeping at it and doing my other essays, and this year Im going to my exams, unlike last year where I didnt go to any. Luckily my department (Philosophy) is really supportive, and I have a studies adviser etc, and nearly all the staff know me and they actually seem to care. I havent told them about my insomnia, but I have talked to my doctor on campus and also my therapist on campus about it, and theyre helpful. Its like no matter what I do or how bad I mess up, Im just always coming out a winner. Just got to beat this damn insomnia :)
