    I use both. I know many, many people who don't use messenger or use it only rarely. SMS messages are good (because they are cheap)

    Most of the people I want to talk to come online. Considering that Im liable to shoot my mouth off, messenger gives me time to rethink before I hit enter.

    Depends, really. Didn't vote.
    For general chitchat, messenger is better, cos it can be dragged on infinitely (not a good idea on the phone, esp. internationally :o )
    However, for 'practical' things like making appointments with friends, a phone can... draw attention a bit more easily then a messenger, and for more... personal contact, I also prefer the phone

    Phone all the way, IIRC I've never used any kind of messenger unless you count e-mail.

    I only use my phone for sms and taking calls (can't afford top make them), the rest of the time I use e-mail, MSN and if it counts as an internet based form of messaging... SP's BoM!
