Never liked the Stones much (no, not even Paint it Black), but I admit their music is very good. Love the Beatles though, particularly their late 60's songs. Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, I am the Walrus, Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite, A Day in the Life, Hey Jude... some are really odd, but a lot of fun to listen to.

I've actually put on the last one after writing this. Great song

 

The songs are still great but turn rock over to the younger generation. The Stones and ex-Beatles need to retire and take care of their duties as grandparents.

 

But the younger generation is terrible. Hear the wise words of Grandpa Dylan:

I think there hasn't been any decent piece of music since JS Bach died - and the polyphony with him. Everything after Bach was just shallow repetition of the same old ideas. Have a look at the scores.

And who was this Dylan guy? Never heard of him. He's a scientist, right? What has he got to do with music?

Ah, "the Stones" and "interesting" in one sentence... and not even a negation between those two expressions...

 

Come now, Darkthrone, while you might feel there's nothing worth listening to between Bach and Rammstein, there's much more to music than the well tempered scale and opera-metal...

 

The Stones

Technically, of course, the Beatles are greater, created more classic songs, more classic albums, were more innovative. However I simply never want to listen to them as much as the Stones.

 

The Beatles were the better of the two. The stuff they did as a band and their solo music just stood out from the rest. The Stones on the other hand are pretty much hit or miss with their efforts. But when they get it right, the Stones were out standing. Hell, I'm on my sixth copy of Sticky Fingers right now.

Most music today is just corporate trash. I think I'll puke if I hear Dave Matthews one more time. And you can't get me to listen to the factory stuff like the boy acts, or Britney and Aguillera. Now I can watch Britney. I just can't stand to listen to her.

 

The Stones! The Beatles stopped being a band when they stopped playing live (couldn't have reproduced anything after Sgt.Peppers live anyway) and you can definetly hear it in the "groove". Try listening to The Stones 'Exile on Main St.' the grooviest record ever.

Speaking of British bands don't forget The Who, probably the most underrated band of the 60/70. Who were the first to deliberetly destroy their instuments on stage, the first to use Marshall amplifiers (big, loud amps), among the first to use synth/sequencers? Half the classic rock poses/moves were invented by Pete Townshend or Roger Daltrey.

 

I think the Beatles believed too much in planning out every aspect of their music, in perfectionism (on sgt pepper in particular). It sort of works, but there always seems to be something missing that you get on looser less precise recordings, exile on main st or even parts of abbey road, for instance

 

You have to admit, with the exception of maybe U2 there are very few "modern" bands with the impact or staying power of the early greats of rock and R&B:

The Who
Led Zeppelin
Hendrix
Dylan
Elvis
Ray Charles
Pink Floyd

Plus, it seems the music now is made for quick hits and then sold to big corporations to sell cars, clothes and soft drinks. Most music today has no soul...It's all about the Benjamins!

I can't remember the last cd I bought where I liked the entire album and not just one or two songs.

 

I voted for the Stones for a simplistic reason: they only had one band member die. Lord knows, it ain't easy. Also, Keith got Maggie Trudeau high.

Personally, I like them both equally.

 

They're both great, talented, influential, and still fairly relevant (as long as enough people think they are! )

I'm not gonna into technical expertise, songwriting ability, album production (that can affect the end product), etc - I'm just gonna go with what has more influence on ME:
