My first passthrough was with Paladin, so for me the Paladin is the best investment... :)

I am going with a Ranger on this one.

As others have stated before, fighting wise, the fighter has the upper hand due to grand mastery in weapons, the paladin can heal himself in combat. However, the Ranger can still hit well, do fair damage, heal himself, and still cast various other spells to harm, distract, or otherwise immobolize his opponents.

Of course this is at higher levels. At low levels, I truly think it just depends on who is in control of which character as they are all about evenly matched.

(a side note is race, if a dwarf is involved, he/she may have more hits than the norm and this could help out tremendously as well. Likewise for the elf with a high dex getting the edge on avoiding being hit and/or affected by spells)

If we are restricting this to BG1 (which I think is the intention), then I give the win to the fighter for the grand mastery and if a dwarf, the extra hitpoints for higher con.
